tubular base tape peeling??

I'm new to tubs so I don't quite know what to expect of them yet. The tub I've got installed on my rear rim is brand new and only has about 60 miles' worth of road underneath it (albeit in crappy weather at the weekend) but already a small section (<1") of base tape appears to be peeling slightly from the tyre casing. It's still stuck firm to the rim and it's only a very small section at the moment but knowing how catastrophic it can be for tub and rim to become separated, I don't want to take any chances.

Should I attempt to repair or replace? If repair, how can I reliably stick the base tape back to the tyre?

I've had the tape come away when taking a tub off. When I've remounted it, I've just put a dab of tub glue between the tape and the tyre and it seems to be fine. However, not sure what would cause it on a new tyre. Is it on just one or both?
  • What tubulars are you using with which glue and rims?

If it's only on one side at the edge of the tyre/rim joint it's probably okay. If the base tape's coming away on the other side of the rim in the same place too (ie the tape is detached across the width of the tyre) then it needs some attention. The best glue will depend on the type of tub you're using.

At any rate, check it regularly for any change and be vigilant if cornering aggressively (or slow down a bit!).
  • Thanks for the replies. The tubs are vredenstein volate. The tape is only coming away on one side. It seems to be where the tape overlaps itself near the valve. I'll keep an eye on it but it sounds like I'm not looking at an immediate change of tyre.

Sounds like you're talking about the gluing tape, not the backing to the tyre so (if so) should not be an issue at all. There will always be small areas (especially round the valve) where its has less contact.
