Where is the Respect

Observations in several areas of life lead me to ask the question.

At the weekend, I was at 2 football matches, one FA Cup and one Premiersh1t game. Despite the FA running a high profile "respect" campaign, players in both games hounded and berate the refereee and showed displeasure at him & linesmen for their decisions. Joe Kinnear manager of Newcastle described the refereeing as "mickey mouse refereeing" - is this showing respect?

Travel on public transport and people walk into you rather that avoid collision. People push past you to get to seat etc.

Children/ teenagers often show no respect to each other or to adults. There is no respect for example to traffic signals and they and adults as well (often with young children) will simply walk across the road ignoring the red light at pelican crossings and expect the traffic to aavoid them.

Queuing is something that seems to have gone out of fashion. People don't care as long as they get what they want. Hence scenes of fighting at the start of major shop sales.

Given all the above, is it any wonder that there is so little respect for life on the roads. Much of the bad behaviour on the roads is not ( despite what we imagine at the time) a deliberate act against the "victim", but is instead born out of a lack of respect for other people. This is so whether it is red light jumping by motorists/cyclists, not letting people out, dangerous overtaking manouveres. Its all about oneself and not giving others respect

The government have talked in the past about respect, but its not put into practice.

The things that made us great as a nation were founded on respect for our fellow Brits (maybe not to foreigners though) Sadly we have lost that

How do we regain it

We're doomed, things ain't what they used to be...

(Actually, I have no problem with mickey mouse refereeing comment, but this did come from the manager of a mickey mouse team! Footie should take the lead from Rugby Union, only the captain talks to the ref, dissent gets a penalty / 10 metre further back.).
  • Because showing manners isn't taught at school & followed up by a thick ear if said manners weren't learnt!
It might breach their human rights!
Remember that you are an Englishman and thus have won first prize in the lottery of life.
  • Do you not feel that the bad road manners is now due to the fact that there arent as many Police cars on the road? cameras cant stop people for bad driving.

Its a society issue, not limited to the roads.

To see it in context of the roads is to miss the whole problem

I can sympathise with your sentiments. I've got so fed up of dodging other pedestrians just barging headlong or groups taking the whole pavement width I now just stop and let them walk past. If you're stood still they won't just walk in to you but when both of you are on the move they don't give a $h!t.
  • But maybe my roads example isnt that far off the mark as a generalisation for the actual root of the problem.

How many police do you see on the beat these days? in their cars looking for the idiots who clearly shouldnt be allowed on our roads? and whats going on in our towns and cities? even the countryside, the deterent has been removed so therefore people do whatever they want.

The respect thing obviously starts at home and in schools, not all kids are thugs as not all car drivers are idiots, not every shopper runs into you, some even apologise if they bump into you.

But the whole idea of people being punished for things has now been removed from society, teachers can no longer punish children, knife wielding thugs are "talked to" as to why they do these things, its got to touchy feely, the thug must have had a hard life thats what made him that way, rollox is what i say, everyone knows stabbing someone is wrong but these morons still do it so they look like proper man to their mates.

The idea of smacking a child in public, note: i didnt say hitting, is now so taboo its ridiculous, these children grow up to be selfish and spoilt and they can then become the problem, but you only have to look at the parents, who brought them into the world, to see why they are like this, see "Jeremy Kyle" for examples.

Can't. One of those things that when it's lost, it's lost forever.

  • It's worthwhile looking at the behaviour of "Role Models".
    Take footballers, for instance.
Their obscene behaviour on & off field and the virtual lack of any sanctions imposed by the FA as they are seen to harangue referees.
Brian Moore's suggestions in today's Telegraph should be adopted instantly.

Surely the problem isn't the behaviour of overpaid 20 year olds, but the very fact that they are looked to as role models. I mean, isn't that quite daft in itself?

No - you know that just the good people that would go to fight - the crap would be left behind to do all the things in the original post, thereby reducing even further the chances of anything improving.

Surely in a good old fashioned war, the intelligent people would be able to justify doing "essential war work", avoiding conscription.
