Gear Cabling and Casing

After a fairly rigourous overhaul of my bike this week, I pretty much failed to realise the sh*tstate of my gear cables.

Still got all original cables from new, bike is now 3yrs old.

Shifting the gears yesterday, and I could hear all the crud build up in the outer tubing/casing.

I think its time for all new parts.

I have standard Deore LX 9sp shifter set on the bike.

Please could someone point me in the right direction for what I need to buy for the job?

If I was to "upgrade" my shifters, would they come with cables? would make sense to possibly upgrade if so....?

  • i have the XTR gear cable set on my bike and they are an amazing difference to normal cables! felt like there was no mech attatched to them when fitted! had them on for a couple of years now and they have been great! the outer cable coating has started to wear off a bit nmow but still spot on shifting!

new shifters should come with cables yes, CRC have some good deals on flood stock at the mo, XT shifters were around half price!

  • All the Shimano shifters I've bought have come with the inner steel cables but not the plastic outers.

    +1

XTR cables are the best - fit and forget.

They are abit more expensive than even xtr cables but a good set of sealed cables like Flying Snakes will pay dividends a hundred times over in the long run.

I had a set on my bike and they stayed as light action and smooth as the day i first installed them more than a year and a half earlier and they would have lasted longer than that if it hadnt been nicked, try saying that about even XTR cables.

They were the single best investment i ever put on my bike and i wouldnt hesitate to fit another set at all, they really were/are that good.

Cheers guys - Think I will try the cheapest option first and go for the XTR cable set. The full set is on Ebay for just under £14.

The outer casing comes in grey which will match my ride a treat too.
