Anyone else like to ride at night?

I just rode for 3 hours around north Manchester, and up to Ramsbottom (including a night-time coast down The Rake!). Great stuff seeing all the cozy houses containing families doing family stuff... and me out in the cold dark night in pursuit of some ridiculous time trialling objective for June 2009.0

I went through a phase of cycling the usual training route after about 11pm. If well lit up it was fine, but I found that there was a lot of nighttime haulage going on and I was a bit unsure that the next 38 tonner was going to see me. A friend got taken out permanently just going home from work at that time of night, by a big rig who was too close to the curb.
I also tried riding first thing in the morning, ie, at dawn, so there was some light and little traffic. Did if for about a year, then decided that a warm bed was better mental training.
Advantages: less traffic, weather usually calmer (just seems that way).
Disadvantages: dangerous (in my area) from traffic not expecting you to be there; abuse, including bottles, from the pub turnout mob; endorphins; not wanting to get up next time the alarm went off.Spring!

Sorry, I seem to have taken this thread slightly off-topic. Has anybody actually run over a rabbit? My guess is it could do a bit of damage or even throw you off...
I had a badger run into my front wheel a couple of weeks ago. It was an evening ride, about 8.30 pm. I managed to steady myself at about 15 mph. With the lanes being so narrow it's difficult to spot them until the last moment.
A real brown Adrenalin moment. :shock:0 -
I live out in the country, so going around the lanes can be a little worrying. Especially if you get some pissed up twat driving the lanes home!0
