I thought about getting a rear light for my helmet - don't want to spend to much - will be used as an extra light on my commute - anybody any suggestions or ones to avoid ?

Well, for a start because it's illegal. Not that I have any problem with that. Just think you might get annoyed if you keep getting pulled over on your way home from work.

    Is it?

My understanding is they are only illegal if "imitating" emergency vehicle.

I wouldn't advise blue ones, but I don't think they are illegal per se

I think that having one would in itself be seen as "imitating" an emergency vehicle. You can have a flashing orange one though, but you might get mistaken for a dustbin lorry!!

hmm, I bought one of these way back, and I've just started to clip it to the back of my helmet http://www.roadid.com/common/learnmore_ ... rnova.aspx

I did read somewhere that you're only allowed red and white lights on a bike, but to be honest I've never been stopped before on a bike.

Do the Police have clamp downs every now and then on this stuff ? (I commute in cental London)

well you will get pulled over by the old bill.

plus they do not stand out as well as a red/white light

there were lots of police at the bottom end of Hyde Park this morning stopping cyclists, not sure what for though.

Luckily I didn't have my blue flashy light going :D
  • Combine the flashy blue one with a siren or horn. Now traffic isn't a problem! Cyclecops go!

Also wouldn't it have to be red if it was rearwards facing by law?

If it's attached to the bike - yes.
