Hello :D

I havn't been on my mtbike for MONTHS due to moving house, holiday etc and it's finally dawning on me that I really must force myself to get back on it! The only problem it that when I last rode it was a balmy summers evening, and now it's pitch black in the evening and generally cold and belting down with rain...

So, any tips on how to force myself out again? I am going spinning tonight (which will probably kill me) and an thinking of detouring a trip to Wales via Cwmcarn at the weekend 8) But I havn't ridden for months, am massively unfit (due to the all-inclusive holiday) and have long forgotten all the skills from Verbier in the summer! Arrrrgh!

If I leave it it's just going to get worse though isn't it.....

Motivational slaps please!!

Buy some stupidly expensive lights, then you'll either a) be dying to try them out offroad at night or b) feel terrible if you don't. Win-win!

Alternatively, considered commuting? Not practical for everyone but I've set myself a goal to commute 3 days a week all winter, should help keep the blood flowing. Or perhaps not if frostbite strikes.

Hmmm, too far to commute (for me anyway!) but a very good idea about the lights. Thank you! :D

In fact I think mine are on the way out so I can *almost* justify it

Combine ideas above: buy stupidly expensive lights; drive half-way and cycle the rest.

Good idea, but sadly my car (Lotus Elise) isn't bike friendly. I pinch my other half's Volvo estate for moving bikes etc, but he needs it most days. It's an idea for those days when I CAN nick it though...... :D

  • TBH if it wasn't for night time rides I'd never get out in the winter, the weekends seem to end before they begin. It is also an opportunity to see forest wildlife (deer, owls and the very occasional wildcat) which I would never get to see during the day.

Good lights essential though, I use Ay-Ups. The rest is just clothing.

    Does that help ?

Hey Sarah, glad to see you back!
No real suggestions for motivation as such (I've been riding less than usual recently), but if you're still in the New Forest area I'll be back there over Christmas if you want to meet up for a ride?

Best idea is to plan a ride and try so very hard to stick to it.

I went out on Sunday planning on only going so far because it was so dam cold, and ended up being out for about 3 hours.

If that fails, JUST DO IT

  • the hardest bit is getting out the door, you need to just MTFU (metaphorically of course ) and get out there. Also consider dragging your other half out with you, always more fun in a group

I got out for an hour the other day for the first time in 6 weeks or so and I feel much better for it !! Once you get that first one out of the way you will get the bug back and be out every weekend again :D

Thank guys :D I guess you're right - I just need to get the first one out of the way!

Lexiekay - sounds great! We have just moved closer to the New Forest so would definitely be up for a mtb ride over Christmas (work off all of those mince pies :? )! PM me nearer the time and we'll work out the details...

Well, I did it, and dragged my sorry @rse out for a mtb ride yesterday :D

It was my partners first ride since breaking both his wrist and thumb much earlier this year, and where did we go for his gentle introduction back into the sport?

    Cwmcarn

We had a fantastic ride and we were both grinning like idiots afterwards. I was even back on good form and didn't come off once. Looks like we're back :D:D

    Thanks for the encouragement!!
