Just back from the 15 mile shakedown run on the s/s bike I've just finished building.

Frame is an early 80's Holdsworth Mistral (a bit chipped but with orignal head tube badge and is 531 tubing) with Campag ends. A friend gave me the frame.

Wheels - Front is a Campag big flange Record hub (32 spoke) with DT ss db spokes into a FIR rim.
Rear is a Maillard flip flop hub big flange with 32 spokes (DT ss db into a Mavic MA3 rim)

I built both wheels myself and am pleased to report that after the first run there was only a bit of tinkling when putting pressure out of the saddle on the first hill - all still true and straight.

At present I only have the freewheel on (a 16 t BMX freewheel), as I think I'll go for the same fixed on the other side.

Brakes are Alhonga deep drop side pulls with Universal levers (two as I'm not fixed at the mo)

Bars are Profil with Bontrager tape.

Cinelli stem , alloy seatpost (saddle is an old BG one but I'll put a Brooks on)

Chainset is a mix of two Stronglights, Escape on non drive and 99 on the drive side. Running a 40 tooth ring inside the spider (i.e on inner ring side) with single ring bolts..

Chainline with one small spacer at the rear is perfect.

Esge Chromoplastic guards (fenders)

Total cost? frame free with B/b stem and post, Brake levers I had, calipers and blocks (new) £11 from Ebay, Chainset I had, chain £5, freewheel £8, Rims about £20 each and £30 for spokes, hubs I had.

Cables £5 from Ebay, bars £2 from our local bike recycling charity.

Saddle I had, bar tape £15.

Total £120 - not cheap but I got a lot of satisfaction from building it.

Have to move saddle forward about a cm

    "Total £120 - not cheap"

But not expensive either for a neat looking bike!

You are probably right. The emotional attachment makes any price seem reasonable.
