It wasn't exactly a pleasant comment to start with, but the misspelling makes it so much worse...
Apart from the obvious misspelling, why's it an unpleasant thing to say - surely no more stereotypical than all the 'Ginge' humour?0 -

Ginger is the only socially acceptable form of discrimination. Homosexual taunts, religious and racist jokes, oggling the opposite sex, bullying and harassment now has to be conducted underground :shock:0

In fairness to our poor Ginger brothers and sisters (bless them) discrimination against CHAVs in much more in vogue. Now a ginger CHAV..'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0

Aaah chavs, my personal hate.
What do u call 4 chavs at the bottom of a lake?

heh heh.
If you see a Chav on a bike, why should you try not to hit him?
It might be your bike.0 -
supertwisted wrote:There was an article, I think, on Countryfile this weekend. It was an editorial peice on the lack of ethnic minority visitors to Britain's country parks, places of natural beauty, historic sites and so on.
this was a terrible article by the BBC,
it was reported by a non-white person, typical BBC only non-white people can report on racial stuff, who started off by saying "i haven't seen many brown faces whilst walking in the peak district today", if a white person had said that there would be uproar,
the conclusion was that non-white people where not being targeted in the advertising for the countryside and there maybe language barriers, which is probably the same for most part of society as i have never seen an advert to use the countryside and some chavs cant read or write,0 -

You've got a point. Why target etnic minorities and not the poor? Also why should we try to change peoples views regarding the countryside? Why target people through marketing methods just so that they come round to a white middle class (rural obsessed) way of thinking? It makes no sense to me. As I said earlier the way in which we view the countryside is cultural and varies in different countries/in different groups. The lack of ethnic minorities does not necessarily mean that they are disadvantaged, it could just mean that they don't want to go fell walking etc! Let people do what they want. The main thing is that there are no barriers to any group - other than that though any interference seems patronising. I would think that if you were to target any group it would be the disabled who would need special facilities and face more barriers (financial, practical etc) than most people.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0 -
Yeah the old Ginger sometimes stick's through the old lycra shorts..................hence the wearing of my GORE shorts over my leggings. :oops:0

P i s s e s me of all this b o l l i x :x
I don't care what colour your skin is,what religion you follow, your cultural background,if your a ginger.
What p i s s e s me of ,is middle class liberals trying to include and target people who don't necessarily want to be targeted or included, just to satisfy their selfish need for forgiveness for the ancestors bigotry
Black, white, bent, straight or thick, i don't care.
Ride a bike, don't ride a bike,i don't care.0 -
+1It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result0 -

Agreed but of course there are lots of people who do care and that's when it gets more messy.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0 -

shin0r wrote:How come mountain bikers seem to be almost exclusively white and male?
A while back I asked an Asian guy at work the same question and his answer surprised me. Apart from the cultural/aspirational differences already mentioned, he said that Asian families just don't 'do' countryside and those that were interested believed that you have to be part of some sort of 'club' or pay a fee to take part. The concept of going out into the countryside and having fun was completely alien to them.0 -
Northwind wrote:Iain C wrote:To the OP...I would disagree about "white and male", as out of the group who I ride with, half are girls. And the bike and clothing companies would not be putting big money into WSD bikes/products if there was not much of a market for it.
Mmm, that could just be niche marketing- how many female-specific models are there out there in each bracket? Not that many.
Hmmmm, I'd probably disagree there...I'd say that the big manufacturers offer a really decent range and right up to top level bikes...0 -

That was the conclusion of the Radio 4 piece on getting ethnic minorities into the national trust places as well. Culturally, the Asian communities see the countryside as places to work (so they said) rather than for leisure. I've been to a few large MTB events over the last year - with participants of many hundreds at each - and have only seen two non-white chaps.0 -
The real question is why don't more white guys play Kabaddi?

Congrats for almost having the most sensible comment on the topic...
However saying things like "it p i s s e s me off.." and "I don't care" actually says that you do care!
In my opinion the topics irrelevant, we're all different AND we're all the same. Its the differences that make life interesting but don't judge or categorise a person based on that difference.
oh and leave the "middle class liberals" alone, at least they can afford decent mountain bikes0 -

Except I am pretty sure that his use of the word bent was not intended to be recumbent in nature, which for me pretty much null and voided the rest of his post.Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

'we're all different AND we're all the same'...........hmmmmm! It does sound a bit like a Michael Jackson track! Cultural differences are self evident and can be deep/significant but I think I know what you mean, that people have the same basic emotions & needs? Yes? But that doesn't stop them been racist or going to war with each other for a variety of political, religious, economic and other differences. Clearly then differences do matter and ignoring them doesn't help. It's better to realise & openly discuss the differences, find the facts and proceed from there. In my view that's the only real problem with Political Correctness (no body here seems guilty of it by the way) - that it stifles debate and open discussion. PC does have some good points thought - cutting back on racist chants/names etc.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0
