Bluddy hell, how hard was THAT!?

I've got a Tiagra chainset (which the Shimano site tells me only comes in nine speed but I've only got eight cogs on me block and have had since I purchased the bike as far as I'm aware).

I tracked down the tiagra product on the shimano US website and managed to work out that I've got a FC-4550-S chainset and the outerchain ring is a Y-1HA98050 50 tooth chainring (although there's a Y-1HA98040).

So, I've ordered it from a cycle shop in Chesire and still feel like I'm taking a gamble!

Paring it up with an SRAM eight speed chain and cassette.

8 and 9 speed rings are the same.

Gah, I though seven and eight speed rings were the same, and nine speed were for narrower chains, and 10 speed for narrower still?!

here is the common misunderstanding as you are partly correct.

the EXTERNAL width is as you say. but geared bike have the same internal width.

also most makers fitted 9spd cranksets as it was cheaper to buy more 9spd than some 8spd and some 9spd.

even the old Pre 2007 tiagra has the same bolt pattern as the new ones so they should fit.

It's very weird though as my front derailer has eight speed written on it; maybe it's not part of the set.

And can I ask what you mean by external and internal?

the derailer will be 8spd. but is not relevant to the chainrings but is to the chain.

the internal width of the chains is the same 6/7/8/9 but the external is different.

    internal or external bearings.

Look here for the different Tiagra sets

    2007 and on...

Arg, I got this so wrong!

In the end I ordered and received a 50 tooth Tiagra chainring, all good, it's what I've got on my bike already, I spent an hour counting the teeth and checking the Shimao website for obscure part numbers.

But the ring I ordered is for a triple chain set and mine's a double. Hence the ring's the right size, has the right number of teeth and is the right colour but the bolt holes are too far apart! The wrong ring is marked 50-D whereas the currently installed ring is marked 50-F.

Quite how I could've told this from this description I don't know:

So, looks like more postage costs, and another week of my noisy worn out chain!
