    Q. With regard rules being rules in the case of Simeoni how did you manage to get a start at the TDU? And who greased the wheels so you could start in the TDU?

    That's a fantastic question.

Which almost guarantees it won't get asked...

Further to that and given LA's "revisionist" view of what occured in his spat with Simeoni "If you were just following wheels and later it was all blown out of proportion why do you still harbour enough of a grudge to try and get his team excluded from a race the thick end of a decade on?"
"In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

  • Q. With all the anger and unsubstantiated claims of doping directed towards you, how did/do you manage to blank it out and focus on dominating the tour for so many years?
    Q. Why do you think people have reacted to your achievements in such a way?
    Q. Which was the hardest fight? Beating your illness or beating the media on a daily basis?

How about an Ashenden inspired question?

Are you prepared to have the areas on your body which could be used for a blood transfusion photographed every day and published on the internet?

Is the internet not sufficiently full of pictures of Lance?

I agree with this and think it should be applied to all cyclists, including the GB track team and Miss Pendleton in particular.

  • The internet is MASSIVE, like the ever expanding universe (or perhaps multiverse). Anyway, that leaves lots of space for new picture of Lance. Lance on his bike. Lance off his bike. Lance next to his bike holding a hat. Lance in the wind tunnel. Lance on a traing ride. Lance with the special bike. Millions of ideas. Millions. And before next July we will have seen most of them somewhere.

You know there is a WADA rule for this?

The entire team is disqualified if one person is positive.

    Pot, kettle black?

No anger or frustration here, mate. Totally ambivalent to LA.
Not too keen on folks who dismiss cycling as irrelevant, but for 3 weeks in July, though.

To all. One the plus side. A least the "office" have managed to generate a bit of "new" interest on that "old" subject.
    70 odd posts and climbing........

Yes, an interesting comparison with the relay team. Would only apply to the specific race and they never had a positive at the Tour, so.....

And by the way, weren't you the guy who posted the fish hook on my "Better than ever"

  • How will you measure the success or failure of your comeback - racing results, income for LAF, 'increased awareness' (and how do you intend to measure that)?

Another superb question and one I am curious about as his stated aim of the comeback is to raise awareness.
    There's no time for hesitating.

Lance, you have always had a lot of support from Velonews and it's forums.
Do you think your Simeoni rational has had a negative effect amongst these fans?

    I have some more questions:

Is it just an urban myth, or did you really have someone monitor every webpage out in cyberspace referencing to you?

And if that is the case, do you still do so now?

I'd love to know what you're thinking with all these questions.

    Er, Google alerts? http://www.google.com/alerts

Thanks leguape - was fully aware of Google Alerts. I just wonder if he really did bother employing someone to monitor it (or worse still, do it himself). I'd rate that in my top 5 worse jobs of all-time.

A lot of big names employ people to look out for their reputation where they aren't looking. It used to be the domain of your average Press Officer but now it's far more specialised. The legal firm Schillings have a reputation for dealing in the legal side of it, see the Terri Hatcher v Daily Sport case for an example, but there are loads of monitoring firms you can pay to send you a round up of everything in the press about you.

It's really not that expensive when you consider the value of a reputation. If I were looking after the Armstrong account I'd be alarmed if someone wasn't doing it, even if they aren't acting on it.

Press monitoring is easy, as you say loads of PR companies offer a cuttings service and will email you a PDF every day of every article mentioning your name, product or whatever you like. You can even do it yourself with some software packages.

But tracking every forum and blog, that's something more complicated.

This is fairly easy, using Google Alerts.

Wow, That is some serious vitriol on a US based forum. A bit surprised.

I missed Blazing Saddles' link to velonews before . Yes , they don't hold anything back do they ? :D

And I thought all the US biking mob venerated LA unconditionally .

    How refreshing . :)

That's kind of my point. No team leader would ever dream of not thanking their team mates for helping them achieve their victory, and since we know that the majority of Lance's water-carriers have tested positive, doesn't that devalue the prizes he's won?

Also, this way we're not accusing him in any way, so he has no excuse to clam up.

No one ever tested positive on USPS or Discovery. Sinkewitz tested positive on T-Mobile when Cavendish was riding for them, does that devalue anything he might have won?

And cycling is an individual sport practised by teams. It's not a team sport in the truest sense. An individual wins but there are teams.

  • This thread has strayed somewhat from the original ' Questions for Lance ' , predictably enough .

However , in the same vein , if anyone clicked Blazing Saddles' link to Velonews' thread on LA's capacity to lie - a long page - and gave up after the first few spears were thrown , as I did , you will have missed a treat . I returned to it and discovered one of the most eloquent put - downs of LA I've read .

Scroll down about halfway and look for the author : ' berzin ' .... ( evgeni ? )

This thin-lipped, beady-eyed, hollow-cheeked gringo boy wonder with the vacant, thousand yard stare who mercilessly crushes any and all competition.

..... is a good example of his style . Wish I could express myself half as well as this lad .

    New question.

Lance, what are you doing with the monsterous start fee's you're charging for your comeback? You've said this is not about the money it's about cancer awareness. Why would you want to change USD500,000 to start in a race in New Zealand, should you not be grasping the chance to get some awareness up in NZ?

How much did the TdU stump up to get you to Oz? How much are the Giro organisers paying you?

There's certainly a lot of money at stake. The "exclusive videos" in the windtunnel were really free adverts for Trek, Giro and Nike, lapped up by the fans and sections of the cycling media looking for something to fill their pages with.

Contador went to the same windtunnel at the same time and cyclingnews.com gave him just eight lines of copy alongside a stock photo.
