Hello People.
I'd like to say hello first of all!
I'd like to know what everyone thinks of the "GT Outpost 2008"
I want a nice bike that will get me about and wont fall to bits!!
I want to keep fit and will most probably go for longish rides in the summer sort of time.
Is this bike ok? or what? mainly i want it to be safe.
Thank you.

Hello Tom and welcome to the forum.
GT are a pretty safe bet and make very good bikes, the Outpost is very much a budget model but having said that it will be much better than no-name cheapos off the web.
GT have worked hard to make the most of the budget available, the componentry is functional if not especially light, and should survive well enough under normal use. However be aware that the fork is suitable for trail riding, fire roads etc but NOT for aggressive all-mountain or jumping. This is not a criticism of the fork, but you need to understand the limitations of bikes at this price point.
The frame is the standard 6061 aluminum triple triangle job which will provide a very good base for future upgrades, and over a period of time you will no doubt replace some bits for better quality (and therefore more expensive) components and end up with a pretty good bike.
I would recommend the Disc version which includes mechanical disc brakes, these will give adequate stopping power in both wet and dry conditions compared to rim brakes which are great in the dry but less great in wet or muddy conditions. Chain Reaction have these in medium for £220 which is a pretty good price.
As with any bike, try to get a ride before you buy, or at least sit on the bike in a shop to check the size. Most GT frames are pretty similar though, so it doesn't necessarily need to be this specific model - although of course it is better if it is.
Incidentally, there is nothing wrong with riding in the winter you know - it's just a different sort of fun !

Thanks for the help man!!!
You say most GT's are the same size - Whats the medium? in actual size? like inch?
I'm 6 foot and bout 14 stone?
What will i need? also whats the chucker like in comparison to the outpost?0 -
medium would be around about an 18" frame I'd guess. You might be better served with a larger frame, perhaps 20" but I'd recommend you find somewhere that sells the bike you want and try different sizes. Its all about what you are comfortable with.0

is heavier as it's the whole bike.
Plus you can't choose size on the Chucker, it's avaiable only in 16" frame.
Are you planing of jumping with the bike? If not, then the Avalanche 3.0 will be a better buy.0 -
Coool thanks for the help guys!
i think i'm gonmna stick with the outpost...i cant find anything of that quality for the same price.. or near offer...if anyone else can?0 -

Hello Tom, you reet?
I used to have myself a GT Outpost, back in......let me think....the fog is clearing.....coming back to me......in 1990 I think.
It was a good bike, and did me well until some lightfingered motherfunker stole it
I don't know what they are like now, so that doesn't really help you does it?
Anyhow's enjoy what ever you get boss.........

he GT Avalanche 3.0 is £250 and it's a lot better than the Outpost.

Hi,
I have an outpost 2007. Didnt want to spend a lot just in case it just sat in the shed!!. Anyway, i love it now. I ride over fields, through woods and forests and it serves me fine, and ive had no problems yet. It probrably aint gonna last that long, but then i can upgrade . Its quite light too, so lifting over gates, fences etc is easy.
If i was you though id spend a little extra and get the avalanche. I got the outpost due to my father in law riding for the local bike shop. He got it for £180!!!!0 -
Coool man thanks.
i'll defo look into the avalanche!
Quick question..
Anyone know what shogun bikes are like?0 -
Carrera Vulcan maybe? The spec's not amazing but they're good value, Carrera have big buying power and no scene tax so their cheap bikes tend to be real contenders... Not a very good fork but then nothing in this price range is, tbh. Easy to replace if you want, too.Uncompromising extremist0

The Avalanche 3 will be difficult to find in your price range, Evans are almost sold out and will no doubt be re-stocking with 2009 bikes. This is also a non-disc version.
Check out the other end-of-line 2008 models for a bargain. For your budget I would be sorely tempted by the Giant Yukon Trail (Pauls Cycles £ 249) http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.p ... 1b0s2p1326
I still say there's nothing wrong with the Outpost, though, if you can get one for around £ 220.
