The first thing that i would upgrade on that bike is the fork.
    Depending of the budget:
    - 100 - 150 - Tora
    - 150 - 200 - Recon
    - 200 - 300 - Reba
    - above 300 - Sid

If it was me i would upgrade the front, rear mechs and shifters to XT along with some quality sealed cables then maybe think about some new wheels from Merlin.

XT hubs with mavic 717 rims is a great lightweight combo that is also very strong.

I'd go for a pair of wheels first. This will produce most noticeable difference in performance. Mavic 717 rims are excellent, then add the best hubs and spokes you can afford.

I'd do the fork, without a doubt. Definately a bike worth upgrading, imo. Wheels maybe, don't know how heavy your stock ones are though. Other than that, think of bits you don't like and change those. Question should never be "what can I upgrade" but "what do I want to upgrade". If nothing comes to mind, leave it alone

Fork without a doubt. Put a Reba on and you'll lose 1.5lbs in an instant, and significantly improve performance, mor so than any other part.

Then maybe tyres, and eventually wheels. Apart from the fork, it is all pretty good stuff.

I have the same bike! I just put a reba SL 2009 on (from Merlin) it totally transforms the bike - so it is a must do!
Funny - I too have out eggbeater pedals on it!

Yep, totally what I'd say also. Forks & tyres make the biggest difference to how the bike handles. The Darts aren't rubbish, but a quality set will be really noticeable. Tyres with decent grip really improve confidence & speed. Kenda Nevegals are nice, Contis also, and others, these are my favourites though.
Although lots of people seem to recomend wheels as a first choice, I reckon replace if/when you trash them. A quality set will save weight & help get you up hills faster, but for me, handling's the most important thing.
With mechs & other components also, whilst quality feels nice to use, may as well wait until they wear out unless you have a huge budget.
  • I`d go for forks.Get a pair of Reba SLs from Merlinfor £240.Biggest transformation I made on my bike,so far.Tyres are a good upgrade too and can make a huge difference.
I`m not so sure that I noticed the benefit of the wheel swap I did on my Giant.I have a pair of XT 717 wheels from Merlin which have proved tougher than the originals but.I`d be lying if I said I could feel the 1/2 pound weight difference.
I reckon you`d need a pretty high end set of £250+
wheels before you noticed any dramatic difference.

    2016 Boardman Pro 29er
    2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4
    2017 Canondale Supersix Evo
  • I'd say forks like what everyone else has said, either reba's or sids depending on whether you lean more towards xc or trails.

Then tyres ('cos they're cheap) which'll depend on what you ride really.

    Then wheels

    then brakes

upgrade your drivetrain as you break bits.

As a rule of thumb upgrade the thing that is slowing you down the most.

You say you love the bike, so why upgrade?

Why not wait until parts break or wear out, or even until you see an on-line special offer of something you fancy?

If your bike came with those crappy Trek grips, then that would be my first change, probably to ODI ruffians.
  • Cheers for the advice, forks and tyre's first it shall be !!!
