I find it's useful in a relationship to make a habit of being right, and being able to objectively prove that you're right, early on. I think I can honestly say I've never lost an argument with my girlfriend in the course of our (almost) 6 year relationship.

I keep a chart and everything.

Sounds like you will have a career in the adult movie business...with that Bobbit bloke. I feel sorry for her father, he must wonder where they went wrong when you come around!

  • I think the received wisdom is: if you want to hide a new bike from the other half don't buy a pinerello or a cervelo they're way too distinct to hide a way. 'Wobbly" seat stays and forks as well as oversized bottom brackets and stays have a habit of showing up on purse string radars. Much better to go for bland paint jobs and mildly boring geometry - that must be why Boardman bikes are sellling ...

One thing you could try if the price question does come up is to say "It was going cheap, look it's gone all funny here (point at rear triangle), but I don't mind that, I can live with that if it means we've got a bit more money in that lovely Icelandic bank"

    What like this one:

    IMG_2509.jpg

Is that the right pic? It seems to be entirely black with a white square bottom middle.
  • Well I bought a whole bike and used most of the components on a rental bike frame + fork, so technically I only bought the frameset... and that's precisely what I told her.

I wasn't keen on the M.O.S.T wheelset it came with (semi-paired spokes which I hate), so I asked him to swap it over before I bought it to something else a little more commonplace + tough. Campagnolo Khamsin, which probably a shite-load cheaper than what were on there...

But can you believe that the same B@STARD who sold it to me had the cheek to whack on what looked like demo wheelset with (brake tracks had obviously been used) + used front tyre? The original seatpost also had a tonne of scratches, the exposed one being covered by a great big token sticker.
This was Bici Sport in Los Cristianos, Tenerife by the way. He must think I'm effin stupid. As if I won't notice. And yes he knows who I am. No I didn't bother asking for a refund... instead, I just won't shop there again and I'll tell every potential client I meet not to buy anything there.
  • ride the shyt out of that bike.?
as far as the purchase. you bought a new frame/fork...................................you are asking the wrong crowd for sympathy..........................we all dig our own hole

13 years married, countless frames/bikes............................. no worries. Chill and beat the crap out of that bici

The reason that your 9 words post is funny is because there is (in my fairly limited experience of women) a lot of truth in it. In plain English ( ) can you explain why communications between men and women don't work like this:

    Man: "How do you feel?"
Woman: "I feel [exactly like this] and [these] are the reasons why."

    Man: "What do you want?"
Woman: "[This] is what I want."

    Man: "Why are you upset?"
Woman: "I'm upset because you did [this] and you forgot to do [that]!"

    Man: "What don't you like?"
Woman: "I don't like {this], [that] and [the other]."
Man: "Oh nooooo - you don't like 'the other' !!!"
Woman: "It's okay honey, I mean the other other!"
    Man: "Phew!!!!"

If I could answer that, I'd be a rich woman (and probably wouldn't have slept on the sofa last night either!)

I've never understood what is so difficult about just being open and honest !

I bumped into the mother of my ex the other night. I was always quite fond of her so I said hello but she was really frosty so I went on my way feeling somewhat put out. I bumped into her with another of her daughters at the shops ten minutes later and tried again. She still wasn't friendly so I asked her what was up. She scowled at me and said "You're in disgrace!" and walked away. I still don't have the foggiest idea what I'm supposed to have done :( !!!
  • Not asking for sympathy tubularglue, just telling the full story and getting something off my chest...

ColinJ, I just don't understand people like that. Would she have preferred you to be miserable forever with her daughter? People leave relationships in order to feel happier... but I suppose the side that gets dumped is often not. But then I don't know anything about what happened so I really should shut up - I've got a wheelset to build.

You were quite obviously son in law material........ you broke your mother in law's heart! How Cruel!!:lol:

As for straight talking....... It is sooo simple guys! We girls do do straight talking all the time but as we know guys can only do one thing at once, so it runs something like this:-
-We walk you to the garage.... to say good bye and wish you bon voyage etc......
You are already thinking about your journey to work (Mind is far away and use of ears:IMPOSSIBLE)

-We realise the light is not on in the garage and tell you to watch out.. not trip over the bikes: you are already consumed with guilt about the last purchase and constructing the excuses (Mind is far away and use of ears:IMPOSSIBLE)

    - You ask how are you? we answer in a straight talking way.... but your lack of concentration is telling you that you are hungry and you fancy a curry, there is a beer in the fridge with your name on it (Mind is far away and use of ears:IMPOSSIBLE)
So we are in fact doomed to failure until you can all multi task: Sorry it is hard but true!!:lol::lol:

Actually, I was the one who got dumped and no, I wasn't (happy about it that is!) !!! The silly thing is we've all been getting on for the 7 years since the split took place.

I've managed to find out what the problem was and it is nothing to do with her family and is no business of hers. Strange old woman!

Oh, and as for the Pinarellos... I'm still not sure about the 'wavy thing' they have going on. Otherwise they look great, but I kinda like straight lines. I wasn't too keen on the curved top-tubes on recent Specialized bikes either.

I'll come out to Tenerife when my finances and fitness have improved. I have a mate who lives near the airport and I want to visit him and tackle Mount Teide (he's told me a lot about it). Don't know whether I'll bring a bike or just hire one when I get there.

I suppose the fact that I dated her daughter for 15 years and didn't marry her might have caused a few problems. Even worse (and it was the thing that caused the split) was that I didn't even move in with her. We lived 50 metres from each other all that time...

Actually I'm very lucky cos my g/f breaks the rules and is actually totally straight talking, disarmingly so. It's the only way people.
You just have to ride like you never have to breathe again.

Shame on you synchro.

Are you referring to the first pic or the closeup?

Actually it is a little nose-high but I'm still dialling in the position. Not super easy with a single bolt clamp, but I'm sick of fiddley double-bolt clamp mechanisms... Although if I have a saddle that slopes down in the middle, then I tend to set the rear bit level, so the nose points a little upwards...

I notice many people tilt the nose down in order to alleviate numbness in the groinal region... that only makes matters worse as you tend to slide onto the nose, increasing pressure there.
  • Yes the first pic. I'm pretty sure that the rule is seats should be level. Don't want anything pointing up and making others go down.

I stick to my point, and I say this as the proud owner of a Prince.

    I'd take this:

Seconded. Jash's looks far nicer in my opinion. Only thing with Jash's is red fork abruptly into white headtube. It's a bit sudden given the blends and flowing design of the rest of the colourways. Other than that it looks sublime. 8)
  • That's a cracking looking bike! ;)

That was an interesting and amusing story! I reckon you got off pretty easy there! ;) For now anyway! Your wife must know that you have an obsession with bikes! I don't think you know exactly the number of bikes you have! :L

What you should have done was buy another black bike or even a dark coloured bike! One more black/dark coloured bike against all the others would very likely have went unnoticed even if it was sitting by itself! But your wife sees a white bike and immediately knows that it is a new addition to the family! ;) I think that the colour white stands out more than any other against black- imagine large white lettering on a black t-shirt!

Next time you decide to add to your collection try to make it a black bike so blends in with the rest!

Do you know exactly how many bikes you have-maybe you will get round to counting them at some point!
  • I have a total of 12 road bikes and 5 MTBs for rent + 3 or 4 further framesets in various stages of completion.

Then I have my own two road bikes, 1 MTB + 1 hybrid MTB (an ex-rental) + 1 DH bike which has just been finished -the idea is that it's available to rent but on a guided ride only. Only the two road bikes haven't been used by other people. You can see these in my signature below, hosted by pinkbike...

Funny you say about the black bikes, because I recently bought a black viper frameset for only £68, and sure enough she noticed it. Eyes like a hawk I tell you!

Still cant get used to the wavy bikes. Looks like they have leant a carbon bike up against the radiator to me. Are they an acquired taste ?

No. You like it or you don't. Personally, it's the curved top tube that I'm not so keen on. The wavy bits are fine.
