Pisspot vs... er, other helmets

Just wondering what the pros and cons are of the main 2 types of helmet... I'm using a fairly cheap Bell Faction pisspot just now, because it was an absolutely perfect fit, and cheap. But I'm no dirt jumper, my riding is singletrack, gentle free riding and trail park, oh and tarmac commuting, and for that pretty much everyone wears giro hexes :D

The obvious advantages I can see are that this type of helmet tends to be better vented than a pisspot. They also seem to be generally larger, which could equate to better protection. Also, the peak on a peaked helmet has obvious benefits- I've been commuting in the rain for the last week and wishing I had one of those...

But in practical and safety terms, which is better? Assuming an equal quality of helmet of course. The lid I have in mind is the ubiquitous giro hex, it fits me nicely at a price I'm happy with and it doesn't make you look like a smurf lives in your mouth.

  • probably both types reach the same minimum standard of safety. so no difference there. like you say giro hex type lid is vented so has to be better for xc. i still feel unsafe when flying down a rocky hill with a massive empty hole in front of my face, fullface would make me feel so much more protected, but gotta be so impracticable for xc heat wise. my head gets red hot after a while even in a vented lid.
hex is very popular but your still gonna look like a smurf!!
