Rattly mudguards

Tried mudguards in the past on my 80s falcon roadbike and while I've nothing against the appearance of them (it's an old commuter after all!), I just can't get the bloody things to stop rattling. Depending on how they're adjusted they either rattle on the tyres, rattle on the brake calipers or slide to an angle as soon as I use the brakes or hit a bump and rub on everything. Never managed to go more than three days riding with them before I ditched them.

Now these have always been cheap (and old) mudguards and I keep hearing great things about SKS Chromoplastic mudguards. I've just acquired a Dahon folder as a spare bike which apparently has rebranded SKS guards fitted so that set me thinking maybe I should give some a chance on the roadie - especially after the ride today which left me black from head to toe from all the crap on the roads!

Any advice or comments on how my aim of non rattly mudguards on an old roadbike could be possible?

Yes, I'm well aware that I'm a bit obsessive about my bike being quiet - noisy machinery is the sign of bad engineering or negligent maintenance to my mind!

Cheers,
Pete.

  • ditch the metal brackets accross the bridge stays on the rear and the front one on the fork crown and drill the guards (4 holes front and back) and zip tie them on , sorted

Good idea, I could see that stopping them from revolving at least.
