Hi looking for some advise. I am looking for cheap road bike to get to college and back and for a runabout at weekends. I have seen these 2 in my local halfords. I know these are cheap compared to entry road bikes but which would be the better of the 2.

Valor

Virtuoso

The 2nd bike the virtuoso I notice that it has been reduced so unsure which is the better to go for?

  • The Valor has the better spec....you pays your money, you takes your choice. Sorry to give such a bland answer, but from those, its the more expensive of the two that seems better.

I had the valour, worked fine for me still worked like new after 1 year of daily commuting (10 miles), has all the bit's to attach full mudguards etc. Heavy ish (about 23lb's) but solid.

halfords doesn't exactly have the best reputation - see some other posts on over last few months.

if you can avoid i'd do so.

I think you mean Halford mechanics not there bikes but there does depend on where you have your bike built
  • I had a Valour for a few months and don't have a bad thing to say about it but if you can, I would buy a second hand Vanquish and spend the extra on a full service. The main problem with halfords is they dont seem to be able to put the bikes together very well in store.
  • Thanks for all replies. Not going to jump in just yet.
  • thought about a singlespeed or a fixed gear bike? Handle neglect well and generally you'll get a better bike for the money you have (cos you don't need to pay for the gearing essentially!)

worth a look are the langster, bowery and a handful of others. Might be worth phoning up pearsons for a custom jobbie on the cheap.
