i race mtb all over europe and today after a training run decided to do last 4 miles on road with 20psi fat tyres .a roadie pulls up behind me at the traffic lights and when the lights go green he blast past me on the flat and then struggles on the hill.why?? i train through the winter on a road bike and to be quite frank the guy was poor to say the least ,but why is it when you see a mtb rider you feel there,s something to prove.my granny could be fast on a road bike .abuse commence!!! (elite guys ignore i know your better than that)

I used to ride a mountain bike on the roads and now I am an unshaven roadie. I get a bit of a buzz if I fly past someone who is obviously pushing hard on their chosen machine...whether it is a MTB or another roadie....I always have FCN numbers in the back of my head!
I am no elite rider but I have never been re-passed by any of my foes to date....It is just bad form if you fly past someone and then blowup at the next hill.17 Stone down to 12.5 now raring to get back on the bike!0 -
If I'm on my roadbike and someone else is on knobbly MTB tyres, I do feel obliged to pass them. Thats largely because the default bike in the UK is an MTB, and most of them are ridden by people who get on a bike to go from A to B, and don't take it seriously.
If I saw someone on a properly good MTB, who's kit hinted at some serious cycling, then I would only bother going around them if I was faster anyway.
As for blowing up on hills, inexcusable anyway. MTFU.Legs, lungs and lycra.

I think Cav's inability to climb is a little exaggerated. To put it into context, his time on the Hautacam stage of the tour this year would have comfortably beaten everyone who did this year's etape - he'd have put 2 hours into me! He can't be that bad really, just looks bad next to the likes of Ricco.0 -

I know, that's why I said apparantly, he's still a poor climber next to most other pros.0 -

Because he's not on CERA rocket fuel? :twisted:0 -

You're not that guy I passed the other night, going considerably slower than me, who then proceded to speed-up dramatically and come back past me again, only to get 50yds in front and then slow again, so I repassed, only for him to come by me again this time puffing and blowing, then slowed again but this time just before I recaught him for the third time he turned-off ?
I was tempted to wait and see if he came back out again once he'd decided the coast was clear and I'd gone away...

How do you know he's not a MTBer doing his winter training on a road bike?
I pass people who are going slower than me. If that means I pass them as we move off from a light then so be it. If they pass me on a hill, no big deal. And that applies no matter what bike I'm on or clothing I'm wearing. What's the alternative, that we stay behind anyone who might possibly be faster than us further up (or down) the road?No-one wanted to eat Patagonia Toothfish so they renamed it Chilean Sea Bass and now it's in danger of over fishing!0 -
I don't see what the gripe is? I overtake riders who then pass me again (usually uphill, must work on my climbing). Why do MTB'ers always assume the Roadie has a problem?Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos0

I hate getting passed by guys on MTB's when I'm out on my road bike, but it does happen from time-to-time...The fact that I'm 3 stone overweight would go some way to explain why I'm a bit 'slow' uphill! I don't care how fit you are or what you're riding - you will get passed by someone on a MTB eventually, you just have to let it go and enjoy the sense of revenge you get when flying past them at 50 mph down the other side!let all your saddles be comfy and all your rides less bumpy....0

You might be faster down the hill, but they've got much better brakes... come the hairpin they'll peg you on the inside...0

Maybe he wasn't a particularly well-trained Roadie ?? - maybe he already had 60 miles in his legs ?? - maybe he was "Commuter" on a rare outing on his road-bike ?? - the list's endless..... - from a single example, it seems a bit of non-issue really.
In general, many riders (on whatever bike) will pass and drop someone else if they feel they've got the legs to do so at that particular point in time - seems fairly normal really.0 -
my girlfriend gets this all the time. She'll go past someone, only for them to pick up speed go past her and then slow down so she has to round them AGAIN!! This is particularly amusing to watch on hills as they get out of the saddle and then blow up further along and she goes around them again. After a while it's easy to spot whose going to try to match her.M.Rushton0

One rider = training ride
Two riders = race0 -
