Hi all. What jersey can i wear that is warm enough in dry winter weather to wear with just a base layer and no jacket.I don`t see many jerseys claiming to be winter jerseys, just long sleeved jerseys.Does anyone have any suggestions?I was looking at the solo equipe one,any opinions on that one?Ta.

    Hi,

You should have a look at the Windproof Jackets section on Wiggle. You will find that many are more like windproof jerseys and are just the ticket for the conditions you describe, my personal favourites (with regard to quality and value) are those from the Gore Bike Wear range.

Have enjoyed wearing the Helly Hanson Half Freeze, but it doesn't have pockets at the rear (if that's an issue for you). Have more recently bought a long sleeve jersey from Ground Effect in New Zealand - excellent product and the service was exceptional
'07 Langster (dropped one tooth from standard gearing)
'07 Tricross Sport with rack and guards
STUNNING custom 953 Bob Jackson *sigh*

Thanks all.I do need pockets.I was looking at the Gore jackets on wiggle but i`m a bit put off by the high necks.Does anyone know are they tight and stiff at the neck {i hate that}or soft and loose?

    i have one of these:
    http://www.evanscycles.com/products/alt ... gn=froogle

I think I paid a similar price - and it is excellent - I usually go out with just a base-layer, bibs and the windproof - if it is really cold (like -1, 0, 1 or 2 degrees) then I add a short sleeved shirt and possibly some arm warmers under neath too .

it is an excellent total windstopper, but breathable at the back.

my only gripe about it is that it soaks up water if it rains - some of the 'harder shell' ones are better with some water resistance.

    Hi, have one of these...

soft shell (so ok around neck) and very windproof, this item has a fleece back so does not get too hot and sweaty which works very well - good kit, into second winter season now

Well I use an Assos Element One jersey/jacket with a good base layer underneath. Warm as toast warm.

Assos Airblock 851 - The only wind jacket you need in winter. I use just a base layer and it keep me warm and does not tend to overheat too much.

These Etxeondo jackets are great, just a base layer needed under one. This Ebay site seem to have all the sizes.

Look a bit fetish it might, but you pay for Assos and you get the quality believe me.
  • Rapha Winter Jersey,

The best top I have ever owned.

What is the quality like on these, at £10 got to be worth a try?

The sizings seem a bit odd....i'd normally buy a 42-44" top...would you go with X Large which is rated at 42"?
    Cheers, Stu

Is it warm enough to wear without a jacket?
I would have got one of those but in the spring i bought a rapha long-sleeved jersey and i liked it but after a few wears it had a hole in it just where the pocket is attached.I sent it back and the replacement now has a ladder in the exact same place.I decided their stuff was a bit expensive if it wasn`t going to last.I also wasn`t too impressed with their communications either {e-mails went unanswered} so decided not to get any more rapha stuff.I may make an exception if it`s a really warm jersey!

it's not just a 'bit' fetish but proper euro-gimp - have you seen the advert with the guy all in yellow? who would leave the house looking like that?

he almost deserves abuse from passing chavs - an embarrassment to all cyclists imo!

The Endura Stealth seems to be a very highly rated all round jacket currently.

Cycling Weekly review suggests you can wear it with just a base layer and it's both windproof and waterproof.

Don't know anyone who owns one though.

Well nobody is forcing you to buy the brighter colours are they? As you say, wouldn't go down well in some areas over her, sure they can get away with it in Switzerland of course. Thank God for the colour range. But what I do know from buying Assos for years, is that whatever you buy, jerseys/jackets, base layers, bib shorts and longs, even socks, it is quality kit which lasts and performs. Simple as that. You sound like someone who has never bought Assos so I guess you wouldn't know.

    oh do i??

it's not really a brand with which I would associate to be honest - the darker colours, the titanium stuff for example, looks ok - but still the design, it's not really for me. I do accept the quality argument right enough and it comes highly recommended on this and other forums.

I do like Castelli stuff - even the red stuff - but my preference would be the more subdued tones from Rapha.

I will, however, buy some Assos shorts next summer to see what all the fuss is about (in black, of course)

You talk as if you haven't bought Assos that's why I said that. It's up to you what you buy mate, I really don't care, but you shouldn't slag off a particular brand until you've tried it. That's what I say ... I find the dark blue ok have to say.

i know i know - I'm not trying to argue honest! - although I have to say that my main complaint of Assos is the styling - so in that case I don't really want to get to the point of 'trying' it .

 aye, definitely sound like someone who hasn't worn assos before.. my ASSOS airblok jacket is absolutely perfect with a base layer down to 0 degrees. One point to remember though!! assos clothing is race fit, so FB's beware

I bought an assos intermediate evo jersey in the spring .I got the lg and it was too tight and i`m not an FB.Their sizes jump from 1 inch from small to medium and medium to large then 3 inches from lg to ex large, for some reason. They must think there is nothing between stick insect and FB`s.It wasn`t warm either and i didn`t like it so it went back to wiggle.
Re. colours i dress all in black at the moment but i intend to get something bright because i don`t want to get squashed by someone who didn`t see me.Better red {or even yellow}than dead.

    Altura windstopper nightvission

I love mine and it does what you require and it is a lot more waterproof than it claims

  • I bought an Endura Stealth at this year's Bike show - and it's fantastic. It's waterproof, windproof, warm, and I just wear it with the long sleeve base layer. If it really nippy I add a buff round my neck to keep out the wind. Having the pit zips is also a good feature. If it's warm though I think it'll be too hot, but on chilly days when it may also rain I think it's bang on.

The quality of these are great. They are normally £80. I got one for £40 from another ebay supplier. I am 5'11' 40'' chest and a large is a nice snug fit

Recently got a Gore Tool II.

Great bit of kit, very well made and nicely cut and plenty pockets. fully windproof and will keep rain off so long as not torrential

Been out for 4 hours in on-off rain/windy today in the peak district, with just that on top- no base layer, warm and dry throughout. It wasnt too cold mind, 8 deg ish

Will need a base layer if a bit colder, the pit zips work really well for keeping a bit cooler on the hills.

At £112 better value than the equivalent assos, I would say.

Great value at the amount they are currently at - £16. Can't go wrong there.
