If you don't have problems with airline weight limits (boxes are heavy) or transport/storage at the other end, then box.

I use a bagg (CRC's own brand), but I put a box inside it! :?
I went to LBS got a cardboard bike box from them, then put the box in my bag.
No weight issues, as yet, with EasyJet or KLM, and I have used it with my full sus. MTB, including spares, tools and riding clothing....:lol::wink:

The CTC sell a see through plastic bag here. There is some evidence that bikes packed in this way are treated with more respect by airlines as they can be seen as bikes, the bag may also offer the advantage that it can be packed up fairly small and carried on tour, which of course large bags or boxes cannot. There is lots of airline information here.
  • So far, I've used cardboard boxes, free from LBS, with no problems - this after we had abent rear mech hanger when using a bag. Having said that, now I've got a better bike, I'm considering a decent box.

As alfablue says, the issue is whether you are touring and can't really leave a box behind. If staying in one place and you can transport the box, I'd avoid a bag if at all possible. Or even use a cardboard box to get out there, bin at the airport, and get another one from a shop near your destination before flying back?

I have an Elite hard case which'll be going for sale shortly. Does have a padlock hasp missing and the odd scrape through use, but I'm parting with mine for £200 plus a contribution towards postage.
