  • I'm not sure on models, but I would suggest sticking to a hardtail in your budget as you'll get better spec for your money. I did the same when I bought my Black Forest.

Also look at some bikes from Focus (on wiggle.co.uk only) as you often find you'll get a higher spec for your budget.
I may love XC, but I won't shave my legs, dammit!

You would be better off getting a hardtail for that price range, both the avalanche and fury are good bikes. Try them both out and go with the one that feels best.

Scrap the Banshee, it's too heavy and overbuilt for what you'll be doing - the Carrera Fury probably has a better spec than the Avalanche. You'll probably have a Halfords near you so try and have a sit on one before buying, same with the Avalanche if you can find one near you.

    GT I'd say.

I'm not sure that the GT has the better frame actually, though it might well do. I'm very pleased with the quiality of mine. Fury has a better fork.

    The Carrera Banshee:
    Weight: approx. 20kg
    Too heavy mate.
You can not do XC on that bike, it will be too heavy for going uphills with pedaling,
and also even for downhill may not be that strong. That bike will be good for nothing IMO.

I would take the Fury but the GT is not bad also.

There is another option along the same lines. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165499

Very similar spec to the Avalanche but a better fork.

I have the Avalanche 1 myself and am very pleased with it btw. :D

JamesKent, there are some different components but you really need to see them in the flesh as often the specs are different to what you see described. My Avalanche had a few bits that were different to what was described on the Evans website and I noticed a lot of errors across many manufacturers when I was looking around.

From this description I would say the main differences are forks Suntours on the Avalanche against Toras on the Aggressor. Brakes, Tektra Auriga versus Shimano M485.
Shimano versus Truvativ chainset, Nevegal v Maxxis tyres, WTB v SDG saddle. So apart from frame and gearing, quite a bit different. It would take someone more knowledgable than me to say which is better though I'm afraid.

halfords tend to be better specced as they are different than the std lbs ones due to halfords stocking/selling more they have a deal with gt.

Banshee is good at what it does but it weighs as much as a planet. The Fury is IMO the best of the three, by a fair old bit. The GT isn't bad at all though. Neither is the Banshee for that matter but it's limited- they made it do one thing (crash down bumpy slopes like a falling boulder) well and everything else badly rather than trying to get it to do everything well and failing. Which is fine if you want to do that one thing and you don't care about anything else.
