hi just wondering what size rotors would i need for a specialized rockhopper 2008 v brake, i want the stroker trail and they have 160mm or 203mm, which would fit and wich ones would i need?

  • 203 isnt going to be necessary, i use 185mm and they have been plenty powerful, never needed more, coming from v-brakes, 160 will be more than enough for cross country biking, and most downhill. 203 are really for dh

203 is a whopper of a disc, 160 is fine for all xc stuff but if you want more power then you can go 185. 15st shouldn't be an issue for a 185 rotor. Some fork manufacturers don't guarantee their forks for large discs such as 203 as it puts too much stress on the lowers. Stick to 160 or increase to 185 if you don't feel it's adequate. Larger discs are better for cheaper, less powerful callipers. The stroker shouldn't need a big disc for you to get the power you want out of it. Plus a 203 rotor is heavy. Ask the shop to cut you a deal on increasing the rotor to 185 if your really worried about a 160. They might give you a discount. Every rider I know goes with 160front 160 rear or 185 front 160 rear (I'm off the 185/160 persuasion - if i need more power I pull harder). I have always found Hayes to bight hard early meaning it can be tough to get a gently braking action - a massive disc will only make this worse.

160's will be fine as stated, but it is worth seeing if you can get the 185 rotor IMO. Yes, the Strokers are plenty powerful enough with 160's at each end- but if you can cut a good deal or even a free uprade then do it. Bit more power on the brakes can never really be a bad thing! :D
