hey everyone!

i'm new to this forum, but have been a very keen advocate of commuter bike riding now for a couple of years. i get pretty sick of trying to weave in and out of traffic, and signal to cars, especially at night, and wondered if anyone could share their experiences.

I have seen these bike lights recently on the net. They look pretty amazing, like they could be the best invention for commuter cycling since the invention of Flouro! Has anyone else used them? Are they worth the investment?

thanks, and happy cycling!

    Welcome!

Definitely not worth it! You would be kinda like the boy in the playground that everyone punches in the arm as they pass by......

I was interested in these as well - I'm a newbie to biking and have questionable balance, so don't usually manage to signal with my arms (I do mange to use body language and catch drivers eyes to make my intentions clear before anyone tells me to get off the road, and I'm working on the balance thing), but the feedback I have seen is that they are a gimmick that won't actually assist you - drivers will not be expecting to see them, and as such, would not necessarily interpret them as and indicatioing signal, as opposed to just another light.

Persoanlly, I'd invest my money elsewhere...

they are pretty kwl, but cars dont look for cyclist with indicators, but they do look for cyclist with their arm out, i think even if you had them i dont think they would work as im not convinced they would be bright enough for a car driver to notice them

I could be slightly cynical and say its interesting how so called "newcomers" come on here repeatedly promoting this item.

Couldn't be acting on behalf of the company could they?

  • Slightly cynical, yes! But also possibly onto something...

I think these are daft - as others have said drivers aren't looking for indicators on a seat-tube, they're looking for an outstretched arm.

I think if anything some kind of glove indicator would be much better. No idea how you'd go about doing that, but if a new poster were to perhaps go back to their company which may or may not manufacture those bicygnals things and maybe talk to their R&D department...??

Ha ha, I did wonder the same thing myself! Anyways, I don't think they'd do any good with all the flashing lights most people have already got on their bikes anyway. They'd either be drowned out by much brighter main lights, be confusing to drivers or just ignored.

They are a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist and they are no solution.

If people want to waste their money- do it on a more deserving cause like send me the money to use for my beer fund.

It will do as much to improve your cycling experience as this waste of money

    Cynical? You? Surely not? :D

Must admit that didn't occur to me, but I freely admit to being naive and gullible...

  • Wouldn't it just be awful if they're a genuine poster and we've all decided they're a spammer?

I'm not calling anyone a spammer- I'm just asking a question that occurred to me

Well whatever - I cant see that they are any use at all. And if you do have questionable balance - you'd be far better off spending your Sundays practicing in a nice traffic free environment - rather than putting your safety in some dodgy signals.

As the others have pointed out - drivers will look at the cyclist to give signals - they wont spot the indicator thing cos they're not looking for it. And you still need to check behind anyway dont you ? Can you do that without wobbling ?

    Waste of money I'm afraid.

    Something like this: http://www.redferret.net/?p=7808
    or this: http://www.safeturn.com/
  • Hmmm, both look pretty good!

What do people reckon on those then? Waste of money or good plan?
