Maybe a stupid question but can anyone give some examples / definations (perhaps even some pics of trails) of the different disiplines in MTB - I know some like downhills are very obvious but where is the line (if it exists at all) say between XC and technical or is it just down to rifer defination?

Cheers

  • It's a bit of a grey area if you ask me, but I suppose XC is longer, less technical riding, progressing up to all mountain riding on longer travel bikes over proper rough mountain terrain with steeper more technical descents.

I reckon what some call all mountain would another's definition of XC.

IMO it just depends on what your bike is marketed as. The type of terrain an "All Mountain" bike (5-6" travel funn suss) is intended for would generally be classed as all mountain, but i can ride most of that terrain on my 4" XC bike.

    Like I said...grey area.

MBR ride guides will give you an idea of what is generally considered XC.

There's also free riding. Look at some youtube vids if you want to see what thats all about.

Trail centres sort of provide spoon fed XC/all mountain man made thrills
