bike lanes

just been out on my bike and i am totally livid at the number of cars parked in bike lanes, i am an experienced cyclist but to someone who is new to cycling it must be quite daunting to say the least. i have just rang my traffic wardens here in bolton and to my astonishment they say they are powerless to do anything about it because the cycle lanes are advisory only, what is the point of local authorities spending millions of pounds of council tax payers money if these lanes are just being used as car parks, you could not make it up could you! does anyone know the law on this issue, any replies welcome.

If it really bothers you, start torching the parked cars or go along the cycle lanes in the dead of night painting double yellows, then the traffic wardens will play ball.0

Cycle lanes are advisory, and IMO a death trap. I dont use them. Ride primary, and overtake queueing traffic on the right.Road: 2006 Trek 1500

I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.0 -

Yes, and, given that you cycle on the road, you should, too.
Advisory cycle lanes, as demarked by a dashed line, are essentially a green bit of lane.
Compulsory cycle lanes, as demarked by a solid line, are not to be entered by anything that's not a bike.
Get yourself a copy of the highway code and read it.
Meanwhile, see rule 141:

Correct, where cycle lanes have a solid white line , these lanes are enforced, your local council should be taking action and the police should also be acting to move them for causing an obstruction.

Addendum: The compulsory bit above doesn't mean a cyclist must use them only that vehicles must stay out of them (Codes 61-63)0 -

Vehicles can enter them in order to park on the near side, crap design having a cycle lane in the middle of two rows of vehicles. :evil:0 -

A mate of mine has climbed THROUGH a car stopped on a zebra crossing. Opened rear passenger door, clambered to other side, opened OTHER rear passenger door and got out. 8)

Nope it's Wilmslow Road in Fallowfield, yep , I also sent the pic to MCC, notice this driver has also taped off the name of the company he works for.0 -
Cars parked in cycle lanes do get my goat, I tend to stay out of them myself, but they are a good idea for less confident riders and as such I think that it is my right neigh my duty to knock the door mirrors of said cars out of line! I also do this to cars parked on the path when walking. But be careful if you do the same, the mirrors of black s4's can come off in your hand and the driver that is bent down getting some thing form the foot well, will get out pick up the mirror and then try to catch you in traffic by pushing down the outside flashing his lights and tooting his horn, you have been warned!
