Road Sign

Now the leaves are falling I've noticed a road sign on my daily commute, hidden by an overhanging tree its on the entrance to a cut through, off the pavement, and dirtied by mould growth.

Its a Red circle, with white background, containing a black cycle. I've had a quick look on the highway code website but can't find it.

What does it mean, - "warning cycles", "no cycles", "cycles only" - ???

doesn't it normally mean a cycle lane/path? Or do all of them have blue backgrounds?

    It means no cycling.

A red ring tells you that something's not allowed.
A blue circle tells you what is permitted.

Maybe compulsory training for cyclists would be a good idea...

Where is this sign? Any idea why cycling should be forbidden on this part of the route? Is it through a park or pedestrian walkway or similar? I assume it's not on a road?

Do you normally ride on roads? I find it a little concerning that you don't seem to know the basics of road signs :?

  • No Cycling! @rse!

That was the one answer I had hoped it wasn't

But now I know I'll have to do something about it. The alternative route home involves the going wrong way over a one-way narrow bridge - I guess thats illegal too.

Compulsory training - you should be red flagged

I find this sign rather strange, normally if something is prohibited eg right turn or left turn, there is a diagonal bar across the image to denote it being prohibited, and this mechanism is pretty much universally accepted, such as in No smoking signs. So, why the heck isn't there a diagonal bar across the bicycle? would make it nice a clear as to what it meant, as it stands, I think many folk think it means it's OK to cycle.

  • Its an unusual road sign - not one I've ever had cause to take heed of - as a motorist - but now I'm a cyclist - I thought I should at least find out what it means.

I use this cut-through to avoid a nasty right-turn at a busy junction - its a path at the end of a cul-de-sac and cuts through to another main road - about 50 yars long - a wide path - I've hardly ever met a pedestrian there.

All the other signs prohibiting vehicles are just red rings.

Banned maneuvers are crossed out, but banned vehicle types, sizes and weights are not.

There's even one prohibiting vehicles carrying people with wind.
  • Could you dismount and just push the bike to avoid taking the busy junction?

I'm tempted to join the majority of cyclists round here who use pavements, pedestrian crossings, and roads with impunity and interchangably as conditions suit them.

I think I'll just dismount if there's any people on the path in future. I used to ring the bell to warn them of my approach.
