Music and Racing

Now it's the off-season, I have a big stack of old Tour and Giro videos to get me through to next year. Let's face it though, the commentary doesn't really add much to the excitement, so I find it's better to turn the volume down and put music on instead. Does anyone else do this? Any ideas for some good tracks to watch cycling to? I find electricy rocky stuff with a fast tempo works well - The Killers are quite good.

I notice that on TV they often use trance-type music to accompany shots e.g. at the end of a programme, but I don't know anything about trance music and as there are no words it's difficult to research on the internet.

Any ideas on how to expand my playlist?

  • Mogwai always works well for me. Instrumental guitar stuff that goes from quiet, melodic sections to crazily loud or layered "spacey" sounds that just build and build.

I did the whole of the marmotte with them on my headphones, in parts they were adding to the secenary.

You surely don't mean to tell me taht you don't find the meanderings of the coaches on workout DVDs motivating though!

If it is trance you are after try Tiesto which itv used. Also try Armin Van Buuren.

Linkin Park can go quite well with cycling as well as stuff like foo fighters.
  • I find some of the Kings of Leon stuff goes well, if you want to go down the guitar road.

Or Kraftwerk for some retro techno?

Kings of Leon is alright - yeah.

I actually find that Radiohead is great for the indoor rollers (obviously it may be an acquired taste).

But songs from Kid A, Amnesiac, and their Live recordings are good. Especially the whole In Rainbows album. Radiohead beats are quite constant and help you ride at a good tempo of about 90-100 rpm.

I've also got a compilation of Beck's music that is fun to work out to.

But EPR, really what you need to do is download some Chris Carmichael or Troy Jacobsen audio from one of their DVD's and listen to that whilst you watch the old Giro/TdF highlights. If that doesn't inspire you to bigger and better things, than I don't know what will

Funny story - I've got an Ipod touch which I'd never use whilst exercising. Instead I use a 2 gig Shuffle that I share with my wife. The other week I was on the rollers - getting into some KOL, RH, Editors etc, when all of a sudden the Dixie Chicks came on. I've never felt so uninspired!
  • You could always listen to this:

  • Rated X - Miles Davis, especially the Bill Laswell mix of it. Perfect soundtrack for a Pantani attack in a 1990s Giro.

Actually I've always fancied the idea of doing a remix of electric period Miles (1969-75) to the film 'A Sunday in Hell'.
  • Hey there,

One of the online radio stations is a good place to start, such as http://www.deezer.com/en

If you look for a trance station, it'll always suggest other artists. That's the easiest way to discover new stuff.

    Cheers

Try anything by Rammstein, or "Shine" by the Rollins Band. :D

    +1 for The Killers.
Green Day - American Idiot, is very good, but you'd better be feeling very fit when they crank the beat up!!!....
St. Jimmy's nearly killed me a few times!
I just select certain tracks (mainly rock) and drag n drop them into a playlist on my iPod, different tempo's for different sessions.

I do ditto to OP: TDF on the DVD and trance on the speakers (TV commentary just turned up enough so be audible).

Gatecrasher compilations provide good VFM trance compilations

Armin/Tiesto and lots of other trance/other dance can be found at
http://www.trackitdown.net/ which offers regular download compilations/top 10s and is a good way to check out other styles.
