  • I have the crud catcher and it's good but these are the best for a hybrid.

I was going to recommend RaceBlades too. Got them on the road bike and they are great. I would suggest that you attach them first, go for a ride, adjust them, go for another ride and only then attach the protective plastic to the bike. Otherwise you end up moving them away from the protectec bit of the forks/frame :(

How heavy are they? Didn't want to spend over £20 if possible

According to evans the 2008 model of the scott sportster p6 has

    "Tyres: S207 700x37C semi-slick"

I'd recommend the 50mm version of the SKS Chromoplastic mudguards

Raceblades don't get my recommendation for two reasons

    1) They aren't as good as proper mudguards. They are are better than nothing and I have used them to ride across a rain swept Wales before. But full length mudguards are superior

    2) Even the "XL" version of Raceblades only claims to be suitable for up to 32mm tyres

    I'll second the Chromoplastics.

Raceblades are, as implied by the name, meant for the racier bikes, and the bulk of their purpose is to keep the rider's arse and face dry.

The crud catcher guards are a similar concept, but designed for mountain bikes. If anything, their coverage is less good than the raceblades, certainly on the front.

Full length mudguards, like the chromoplastics, are really good as far as coverage goes, and they're pretty much fit-and-forget.

Isn't that the point of mudgaurds?

  • I have a crud catcher AND full length muguards as I've found all the water and crap that makes it way all 'round the front wheel and sprays back goes all over me water bottles. I use the crud catcher to keep them protected.

Sorry to be a bit narrow, but budgets only allow up to £20 and need them and don't know if "full" mudguard will look good?

Full mudguards will never look 'good' but it all depends on your priorities.

I have a rear crud catcher, and front trials style guards on my MTB, but they are not comprehensive, and I would never use them for commuting.

If you are cycling in in non work clothes, and have shower facilities, then they will probably do, or you could just go with no mudguards, and shower/change when you get there.

I have full SKS guards on my Carrera and Marin tourer, 60mm and 35mm respectively.

Looks wise, the black ones IMHO look the best and aren't that noticeable, especially if you have black tyres and wheels.

I bought my 60mm ones from spacycles, Ribble are generally the cheapest for narrower ones, but they only seem to go up to 45mm, which might not be enough for your tyre width.

The 60's on my Carrera are probably way too wide, but I care not a jot, as it's my commuter bike, and it does a good job.

You pays your money, you makes your choice I guess.
