As the title sugests, I just bought myself a brand new KMC chain and cassette and although I've lubed the cassette should I also lube the chain? I read, or heard from someone, that the factory lube the chain gets is the best and you dont need to oil it for a while. Nothing on the KMC site apart from general maintenance stuff.

Thanks....

  • Ride it for 100-200 miles (depending on conditions) before you bother lubricating. And resist the temptation to use degreaser on it!

Discussed quite a bit already - a search on the forum might turn up some useful information :-)

Get some Prolink Progold and use that as per instructions (and before putting any other stuff on) - you will find it both clean and pretty waterproof, your chain will thank you.
  • Thanks for the replies. I lot of the previous threads relate to cleaning an existing chain how to, what lube, etc but I have found my answer from my cycling angel that is Sheldon Brown who was the one who said that a new chains lubrication is the best.

Yes, indeed he is right, but in foul weather you will want to add some lube of your own within a fairly short time.
