Has any got a / test ridden a Marin Quake 7.1?, what are they like to ride, can they handle drops and use for some DH riding? and what the weight like as they look bulky.
They look complicated hows the rear end work,i keep looking at the pics and tring to work out how it moves.
I may get one before Xmas and my other choice is Kona Stinky what the comparison these bikes have for what i need dH riding and freeriding.
I don't have a bike addiction problem.....bikes seems to have a problem with me.....it just can't seem to stay on.

  • i've got a 7.3 so hope i can be of some use.
do a youtube search for jesse wigman to see what a quake frame can handle - basically i really wouldn't worry.

also i did the fort william enduro dh on mine (air shocks front and rear too) and i really didn't test anything on the bike i don't think except the brakes ha ha.

weight could be a bit high. mine is pretty much 40lbs give or take. but. i ride xc on it and have done most of the big trail centres in the country on it. cwmcarn, afan, coed-y-brenin, coed llandegla, glentress, innerleithen.

i thought the marin webby had an animation on how the linkage works but can't see anything. it looks compliacted but its really not too bad. bit difficult to clean admittedly but thats not really a big point.

compared to the stinky i think i'd get the marin. a friend is looking at getting the stinky actually. both do the same thing but the quake does it better ;)

thanks forthe reply, so the qake will do it better, must admit the quake does look different. Only think dont like about the quake 7.1 is it has em 24 grears think and the front forks will need replaceing, while on stinky 08 version is got good forks and 9 speed which is great. On the 07 stinky its great too for me to as its good price and same sort spec the forks can leave on for time being too so wont have to spend money on it till next year. Ill check out the clip later when get back from work and the quake does look pain to clean though.
the cost about £1099 at mo same for 08 stinky while 07 stinky is about £900

Been thinking of the Quake myself, looks superb,on the 7.2 it has a rear air shock, how does this compare to a coil shocked 7.1,
    Chris
  • I've got an air shock on my 7.3 as i said and i don't notice any problems with it. I'm no pro and could probably notice a difference with a coil but i'm more than happy with air right now.

fort william i had 35 psi tyre on the rear? so quite hard but pro pedal nearly fully off and it was a delight to ride. completely surprised. i look forward to nasty sections of trails or DH when i can stop pedalling and let pro pedal right off. its a true delight.

damn. wish i was out there now.

    - i was glad to read in your post that you use your bike for XC and that you ve done some big trails with it cause I do a lot of XC and long trails on my 7.2 and for me the weight of the bike is not a problem and once you ve got used to it because it s a bit bigger then the stinky and similiar models the feeling of comfort and domination are a delight... :D
