Winter trousers for MTBing through the coldest months

Do people on here recommend using fleecey lycra or "trail pants". What do you prefer and why, and which ones do you recommend personally please?

tights with baggies over the top so as not to look too serious, warm and comfy!!

Just bought some Altura Attack (over)trousers. Waterproof but have proven quite breathable so far. You can unzip the lower legs and just fasten with the velcro to le t abit of air in. Very good investment so far, although as with most 'waterproof' items, I'm not sure how good they'll be when they get so muddy I need to wash them.

To your question- shorts with overtrousers when really cold. On shorter rides in the cold (5degrees plus- not mega cold) shorts and shin pads are a good combo. Protection and warmth!

Full length winter bibs with waterproof trousers over the top.Rode Penmachno the other day with quite a bit of snow on the ground, wore shorts over my bibs. Feet were fecking freezing (wearing sealskinz) because the water came over the top. Shorts now not being worn till it warms up! So overtrousers and bibs it is from now on.

3/4 length endura thermolite bibs with baggie shorts over the top - keeps knees warm etc without looking toooo roadie!

3/4 thermal lycra bibs with 3/4 Endura singletracks on top...... toasty warm!

Bib tights with baggies. Last winter I tried to wear water proof over trouser in the snow, put my foot down in a deep puddle. The muddy water went up my leg then down into my seal skinz socks. As they're water proof the water stayed in there and froze my toes!!! This winter I'll stick to the tights,they dry pretty quick and are suprisingly warm. Now I now why women wear them under short skirts!!!!
