Hello all,

I recently had a road accident on my bike (cannondale bad boy 700 '08) which ended up in me receiving a few injuries and my bike frame cracking..

Before buying this bike I had the intention of buying a road bike and now that I am effectively bikeless until hopefully I can reclaim the cost of the bike through a compensation claim against the driver I have decided to fullfil my original idea of getting a road bike.

I have been doing quite a bit of research on this website and various others and come to the following options which I am still pondering over, each one seems to have compromise in terms of either frame material, components or obviously the price point I was after a little assessment from people on here: (Also bear in mind I am 6' so will be looking at the 58cm range of frame sizes

Trek 1.9 2009 - £1,100 - Evans cycles -
+ - full ultegra groupset
+ - lower end of price spectrum
+ - try before buy
- - Aluminium frame as opposed to Carbon

Trek 4.5 Madone 2008 - £1,100 - Evans cycles -
+ - Reduced from £1,400
+ - Carbon Frame
+ - lower end of price spectrum
- - Shimano 105 groupset as opposed to ultegra

Trek 4.7 Madone Triple 2008
+ - Ultegra groupset
+ - Carbon Frame
+ - Reduced from £1600 to £1400
- - Prob wont use bottom gear on triple shifter
- - Higher end of price spectrum

Focus Cayo Shimano 105 2009 - £1000 - Wiggle
+ - bottom end of price spectrum
+ - carbon frame
+ - good reviews
- - Cant try before buy
- - 105 groupset as opposed to ultegra

Focus Cayo Ultegra 2009 - £1500 - Wiggle
+ - carbon frame
+ - ultegra groupset
+ - good reviews
- - no try before buy
- - top end of spectrum

So those are the 5 main contenders with pluses and minuses - please let me know your thoughts and if you have any alternative suggestions

Thanks, Jon

  • 6 foot might put you on a 60 Get measured first!!!!

i am biased and would go for the Madone 4.5 yet you can still get 4.7 in compact at £1600

Saying that there is not much difference between 105 and Ultegra

Remember with Wiggle you can try their Focus bikes for 7 days and then send back if you do not like them
