Hello all,
I recently had a road accident on my bike (cannondale bad boy 700 '08) which ended up in me receiving a few injuries and my bike frame cracking..
Before buying this bike I had the intention of buying a road bike and now that I am effectively bikeless until hopefully I can reclaim the cost of the bike through a compensation claim against the driver I have decided to fullfil my original idea of getting a road bike.
I have been doing quite a bit of research on this website and various others and come to the following options which I am still pondering over, each one seems to have compromise in terms of either frame material, components or obviously the price point I was after a little assessment from people on here: (Also bear in mind I am 6' so will be looking at the 58cm range of frame sizes
Trek 1.9 2009 - £1,100 - Evans cycles -
+ - full ultegra groupset
+ - lower end of price spectrum
+ - try before buy
- - Aluminium frame as opposed to Carbon
Trek 4.5 Madone 2008 - £1,100 - Evans cycles -
+ - Reduced from £1,400
+ - Carbon Frame
+ - lower end of price spectrum
- - Shimano 105 groupset as opposed to ultegra
Trek 4.7 Madone Triple 2008
+ - Ultegra groupset
+ - Carbon Frame
+ - Reduced from £1600 to £1400
- - Prob wont use bottom gear on triple shifter
- - Higher end of price spectrum
Focus Cayo Shimano 105 2009 - £1000 - Wiggle
+ - bottom end of price spectrum
+ - carbon frame
+ - good reviews
- - Cant try before buy
- - 105 groupset as opposed to ultegra
Focus Cayo Ultegra 2009 - £1500 - Wiggle
+ - carbon frame
+ - ultegra groupset
+ - good reviews
- - no try before buy
- - top end of spectrum
So those are the 5 main contenders with pluses and minuses - please let me know your thoughts and if you have any alternative suggestions
Thanks, Jon

whats the rrp on these? never heard of them... also not familiar with all the components apart from dura ace, are they generally good?0

Focus Cayo 2008 £899. Simple! Keep the £££ saved to upgrade the wheels as and when you feel the need.0
-
only small frames left for the 2008 cayo which is a shame - will need probably a 58cm frame and the biggest they have is 54cm... Thinking the planet X self build dura ace now for £899 seems a bit of a bargain..0

I've got the Planet X albeit with Ultegra, great bike, love my B wheels.
the only thing is you cant try b4 you buy.
Since you don;t have a road bike, I'd go for one where the LBS can fit you properly.
I don;t believe you will ever notice the difference between 105 and Ultegra unless you've ridden both for a while.
SO the key would be Frame and wheels, the 4.7 looks excellent, sorry but another option may be the Specialized Roubaix Elite £1400
But get the bike fitted !0 -
Could I not just try another similar road bike and get sized up on that and then buy the planet x based on this fitting? Seems like to good an offer to turn down - the only thing that concerns me is the brakes look pretty poor.
On another note my dad has just offered me his old raleigh dynatech 700 22.5" frame absolutely free... confusing times0 -

Definitely go for that.........I wish I had £900 waiting to buy a bike, hell I don't even care that it's Shimano for that much money........0 -
Unless you want to be hunched over and racing every weekend then would suggest a Roubaix Elite - circa £1200 - I think it's very similar in performance to a Madonne 5.2 and £500 cheaper0
