dropping some weight off my cindercone

Have built this bike up over the last few years and it weighs in at just over 26 lbs which im not completely happy with. I would like to get it down to about 22lbs if possible without doing anything silly like drilling holes in things, removing paintwork or usefull parts.
I weigh about 12 stone and am 6 foot, i mostly do cross country and trail riding (nothing to agressive, major drop offs ect) i also plan to use the bike on the road a fair bit.
I am looking for peoples opinions and ideas on this one
Heres the spec
Frame ; 2003 kona cindercone in blue 19'
Fork ; Rock shox dart 3 (2170g i think) (i wish i hadnt been this impatient and cut
this corner, bad fork and very heavy)
Brakes ; Hope mini (newer version with 160mm floating rotors and braided hose)
Rear Mech ; lx (311g)
Front Mech ; lx
Shifters ; lx
Cassette ; xt (264g)
Chain ; Sram pc 971
Wheels ; Mavic 717disc laced onto shimano xt hubs (these weigh in at 2070g which i
wasnt happy with, i had hoped they would be a bit lighter but i didnt specify
the spokes and i think they just used generic cheap spokes)
Stem ; smica aluminium (120g)
Bar ; Easton ea50 flat bar (170g)
Seatpost ; Bontrager carbon (230g)
Seat - sdg bell air ti (258g)
Chainset ; lx hollowtech 2 (907g)
Pedals ; mk lux (300g)
Tyres ; Panaracer razor xc (front 2.1 @470g and rear 2.3 @ 550g)
Seat post collar ; unbranded (54g)
The changes i am thinking of so far;
a nice set of white 08/09 rs sid 1475g saving 695g
maybe some hope hoops pro 3 sp 1620g saving 450g
easton ec90 carbon flat bar 99g saving 71g
xtr rear mech 189g saving 122g
hope seatpost allenkey collar 19g saving 35g
total 1373g

How much does frame weigh? Might be cheaper to replace it with a cheapish lightweight frame.
Also a big poo saves you 200g and is free...
Rather than buying the hope hoops, get your wheels rebuilt.
Also, saddle, road ones weigh a lot less.
Look at grams lost per pound spent and go for the most efficient ones first. But I suspect you frame might be a good place to look.0 -
im guessing the frames probably about 4lbs so i could change it for for a kula frame which i think is about 3lbs but im not keen to rebuild the bike just yet.
What would u rebuild my wheels with, just better spokes and alu nipples or different hubs aswell?0 -
different hubs, older xt are heavy. I'd sell the whole wheelset and get a new pair maybe xtr hubs. Your upgrades are going to cost about 750 quid, you can buy a new boardman pro for 950 which is sub 24lbs. Your frame is ultimately holding you back.0

It may cost a bit but if the OP wants to upgrade "his" bike then cool. Do it.
I'd say forks first then wheels. These will probably alter the characteristics of the bike the most and you will get the most from these.
Part of the enjoyment I get from Mountain Biking is upgrading parts, it gives me a sense of satisfaction knowing that I have changed this and that to something I am perfectly happy with. Yes I could sell my bike and probably buy a cheaper lighter one, but it wouldnt have the parts on exactly to my specification, and I love my bike. It may be like the broom that has had 7 different handles and 7 different heads, is it actually the same bike that I started with, probably not, but I see it more as an evolving entity rather than just a hunk of metal and rubber.....http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7231/6933696372_603c9ce220_b.jpg

I would say forks definately and wheels, also think about tubeless for an extra saving. as for the rest I would only replace when worn out rather than just for the sake of it. for example paying £100 to swap to a carbon handlebar to save 70g is silly, take the Mars Bar out of you camelbak and you have saved about the same and 50p too. Light weight biking is not the be all and end all as some would believe.0

I'm not massively into saving weight for teh sake of it, but maybe new forks would be worth it. wouldn't it save about a pound upgrading to some Reba's for about £200 (if you can get £30 for the Darts)? The extra £/pound to SID's insn't worth it imo.
I've got some new XT hubs with Stans arch rims. Probably in between your current wheels and the hope hoops, but with more weight off the outside as no tubes needed as well as slightly lighter rims.
Shame Wheelpro aren't making wheels currently- Based on what you've said some Stans Arch on XTR would be sweet!
Anyone know ay other places to get Stans Rims built up?
I understand the desire to build up your current bike- it's one of those things that when someone else lists a bunch of upgrades they're considering its easy to say 'just buy a new bike', but when it's your bike, especially if you're going to get an upgrade at a time and spread the cost, it seems much more fun!0
