Alternatives to Marin Rocky Ridge?

Hey guys, new to the forum, looks like a great site so far!

I'm currently looking at buying a new bike as my old Trek has seen better days, I've always liked Trek bikes and have been looking at the 6700 and 8000 as possible options - the 09 models are beautiful looking bikes. However the reviews are a bit mixed, especially on some of the components.

However I am not quite sure these really suit what I'm after in a bike as they are more along the lines of xc racer type bikes. Although I mainly ride xc i always find myself looking for challeges and jumps and generally 'messing about', therefore I think I should probably go for something a bit tougher.

One of the main contenders is the Marin Rocky ridge, I've looked at one in the local bike shop and i think its definately more the type of machine I'm after, however I've gotta admit I prefer the classier more technical looks of the Trek. Basically I'm after a good allround hard tail that can hack some abuse on trails and dh sections, but also performs well on long xc rides.

Can anyone give opinions on these bikes and also other alternatives to the Marin? Looking around the £1000ish price bracket.

  • Have a look at the Brodie Holeshot, a bit over uour budget but i know the importers had a few bikes on offer for about 1k.

Also they have the Climbmax, more tradtional hardtail, but still good for some tough stuff being a Canadian bike. I knwo the guys at progressive bikes and they have a 18" on offer for about £900.
