Alright all
Pick up my new Trek Fuel EX 8 next thurs and was wondering if I should change the tyres straight away.....
Comes with Bontrager Jones XR, 26x2.2, but with winter here and mud all over the gaf wouldn't a thinner knobblier tyre sink into the mud and grip better?
Panaracer fire XC pro's?

How a bout a mud specific tyre like a Trailraker?0

or bontrager mud X
But see how you get on with the standard ones first. No point throwing money at it if you don't need to. IIRC the Jones has a similar tread pattern to the Mud X anyway. Mine certainly did.0 -
I just couldn't get on with my XR's on my EX8 so I changed them for Kenda Dred Treads
these have proved to be brilliant allround tyres - Road - Trail - Mud etc.......
But if I was to go for and all out winter tyre I would go with the Mud-X!!
Enjoy !!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
I strugled with the xr's on my EX9.0 till i went tubless then they felt like a totaly different tyre. But have just put a set of Mud X's on and they are realy suprisingly good as a all rounder tyre considering how they are billed as a mud tyre.0

XR's really are pretty useless in the wet in my experience...0

yep i found the same. The XR is only good in dry, firm packed conditions. In mud the tread just clogs up and gives no grip.
I've swapped the rear for a 26x2.0 mud-x which is fantastic, especially in thick gloopy mud.
The front i've swapped for a 26x2.2 ACX which i've only done one wet evening ride and seems great0 -
+1 for the XRs not being great for winter. If the shop will do a swap or part ex for them i'd definitely look at something more winter specific0
