  • BMI is an awful tool to use to determine your health status. especially for people (hopefully like most of us on here) that are quite active!
according to the BMI guide, i'm obese, nearly clinically obese!

i've done whats called a bodpod test on myself www.bodpod.com and i'm around 16% body fat...thats about average, nowhere near clinically obese! (done in uni, i'm training as a sports nutritionist)

BMI should only be used if you are in the "general population" ie the equations aren't adjusted for more active/athletic people, and doesn't take into account fitness level.you try putting in the dimensions for a rugby prop!!!

if you want a real indicator to see how at risk you are of cardiovascular disease (the basis behind the BMI indicator) a more useful/specific method is to use the waist to hip ratio.
as central obesity is a very good indicator of cardiovascular disease, the waist to hip ratio is starting to be more widely used by doctors and sports nutritionists.
    Read here: http://www.bupa.co.uk/health_informatio ... asure.html

Men: WHR over 0.9 = higher cardiovascular disease risk
Women: WHR over 0.85 = higher cardiovascular disease risk

You need a set of scales that pass an electric current through you, or can be estimated using calipers to grab a fold of fat!

Probably tell you how dead you are ;-)
  • there are so many different guides about skinfold measurements and none are very accurate.
the electricity method is called "bioelectrical impedence" and can give a reasonably accurate indication of body fat %...the gold standard is the BODPOD (i've done all 3 in uni).

you can pick up BI scales from around £30 online.

Varies for us all, not always an indicator of fitness. Fatigue and illness ie an infection can raise it as can stimulants such as caffeine.
  • did an experiment in biology last week, 1 coffee only raised it by 2BPM, only thing you listed then that could've raised it i guess is that i have a cold

    The link's no longer working.

I was kinda lookin forward to doing the test. A couple of years ago, I had my BMI measured at the gym. I was 'clinically obese'! Not bad considering I was circuit training, swimming and doing weights regularly!
