I am fairly new to mountain biking and i am looking for my first bike. What bikes are best for me? Budget: £550 - max £600. I know i cant get a new Kona Hoss with that money, but what other alternatives are open. I have looked around and it seems that Specialised, Kona and Trek are the makes to go for. Any suggestions?

What type of riding will you be doing, fireroads, downhill etc?

Well I got my first bike at the start of this month. I am also 6ft 2" and am currently 18 stone, down from 22! I went for the GT Aggressor XCR from Halfords and I got it for £575. I think for the money it has a great spec:-

    FEATURES AND BENEFITS:
GT Triple Triangle Aluminium frame with butted and hydro formed tubing
Rock Shox Recon 351 U-turn fork with 85?130mm of adjustable travel
Motion Control adjustable damping and lock out
Avid Juicy 3 hydraulic disc brakes 180/160mm rotors
Shimano Deore/ XT 27 speed gearing
Truvativ Firex GXP chainset with GIGA X pipe BB
    Maxxis Ignitor 2.3 tyres
    WTB Speed Disc rims
    SDG Bel Air saddle
    GT oversize bar and stem

I am loving it so far and have done over 200 miles since I got it. About 60 of these are off road riding single track in Epping forest. Frame seems strong and looks like it can take a fair amount of abuse. Although I have yet to do any jumps/drops to put my opinions to the test :D

    Road and light of road.
  • Cheers xgeek. I'll taake alook at that. "Hydraulic brakes" on the GT. Wow! Bike Braking Tech has moved on!!!
  • Hi, I am also a bigger than average bear and started off a year or so with a Marin B17.
This is a very sturdy fella and comes with a nice spec.

Lost a bit of body mass and now moved onto a Cannondale Prophet 1 (had to sell the wife to afford it!)
