High Roller as front tyre?

Going to put a UST 2.35 High Roller on front of my Yeti, but have been told they work better as rear tyres.
Anyone got anything positive or negative to say about them? Currently loving a 2.35 Nevegal on front, but doesn't come in UST flavour.

They work well as both front and rear as far as I am aware. The only negative I have heard is that there isn't much grip after coming off the central ramps and before the shoulder tread bites, but that is something that people apparently get used to."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Hi,
I run a 2.35 kevlar highroller on my front, it's been a great tyre in the wet warmer weather. But this morning with a bit of a nip in the air and plenty of mud didn't seem as sure-footed, colder rubber a bit stiffer maybe.
Started off with 20 psi and dropped it to 13 psi to get back the grip.
I'd planned this week to put a minion 2.35 42a on the front to see how that performs.
But maybe the best would if I had a set of swampthings ready to put on when it's been raining that much and stick the normal setup back on when it dries upNow where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"0 -
I use a Swamp Thing 42a super tacky single ply up front, for better grip
on the wet roots etc and riding has if dry, and run at 35 psi
I agree with Black Spur regarding the High Rollers and use a Schwalbe
Fat Alberts on the rear as there is grip all round the tyre.
Minions a Downhill tyre depending on what you are doing to save weight
buy a single ply tyre.0 -
I've not had any issues with mine - very grippy all round. I've been using the folding version as a front tyre. Recently bought a tacky (42a) HR but haven't used it yet.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0

I run a super tacky high roller on the front and its gripped onto anything i've ridden since i put it on. I've no plans to change it but i've not tested it in really muddy conditions. See what you mean about the cornering but you only get a tiny slip before it hooks up again - you get used to it very quickly0

I use a super tacky 2.35 on the front and its great for grip imo. Not very fast rolling though.0

Cheers all, I'm going to give it a go then.
I prefer a rounded tyre profile myself, but I'll try anything once and they do have a good press.0 -
Im confused about what High Roller to get for the front.
I bought a pair of WTB MotoRaptor race 2.1 - they are light but the front grip at trail centres (Dalby) has been pretty bad - better than the Conti Vapors but still pretty dodgy - only notice it on the bermed corners but i have very little confidence in them - feels like they are sliding out.
Thinking about keeping the back one on and getting a High Roller for the front.
Its to go on a Boardman comp and i mainly ride, Dalby, GTred and black, Inners XC, Kirroughtree, Dalbeatie - would like to keep a lightish tyre but the grip is more important.
Im confused abiut all the DH,FR and all the numbers also what width - any advice?
Thanks in advance....0 -
I get confused on this myself but with Maxxis 60a is regular (pretty hard wearing) and 40a is more tacky (more traction but not hard wearing). There's another one two I think. Also got folding, single ply and double ply - hevaier and more sturdy as you go on. Correct me if I'm wrong......'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0

so this one is std wearing but what is the a for and are all the 62's kevlar bead?

I pressume DH and FR models arent suitable for what i need and this xc model will do? Maxxis - surely you can make this less complicated for idjits like me.0 -
I wouldn't have though of using a FR/DH tyre for XC but a mate uses them and rates them highly so thought i'd give it a go. If i start racing i'll change to something lighter and faster but i wouldn't rule out the super tacky based on how its categorised.
I'm not sure what the 'a' means. I agree its a bit complicated!0 -
i still think HR's are one of the best all round tires. It scares the crap out of you the first time you really lean them over due to the gap between inner and outer knobs but as pittpony said you soon get used to it, and they give you the confidence to really throw the front end into corners. And the ST isn't much slower rolling than the max pro 60 but is a lot more grippy. I run a ST up front and max pro 60 on the back, both 2.35's.0

This is the folding XC one with the regular compound, yes. BUT this is the 2.1 (narrow) version, I've always used the 2.35 version of the same tyre which is better as a front tyre if you are tackling the rough stuff and aren't racing. Chain Reaction do them at a good price too by the way. Just to confuse you further the Panaracer Cinder (2.25 folding) are also very grippy all rounders.
Actually I have got a barely used 2.1 HR in my garage (which you can buy) if this is the one you want to go for. I swapped it from a new bike as I don't go any smaller than 2.25 as a rule. passout you have pm
I cant find a 2.35 XC kevlar 60 - any links?0 -
I may have made a mistake as I can't find one either! I thought the 2.35 60a kevlar/folding was an XC job but on reflection they've probably put it under DH. Anyway, they are suitable for general trail riding. See: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=21821
I have returned your PM about the 2.1'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0 -
I use a 2.5 60a single ply on the front of my XC bike works a treat was really controllable last night in the rain and mud, had loads of twitches but the tyre so good its easy to get it all back under control. Just need something for the rear as im using one of my 4X lopes tyre at the moment.0

HRs are good on the rear too. I'm using a 2.25 Cinder on the rear at the moment which is very grippy.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0
