Overall a good commute i think i have the perfected the best route from Failsworth to Royton [Coin Controls now Money Controls ] in the morning i go straight up Hollins rd through Oldham town centre past the hospital and then straight on to Royton.
On the way home i take the back streets of Chadderton and then through Hollinwood to wards Failsworth. Bet your commute is far more scenic though ??
That's all bringing back some memories, almost making me homesick!! When I used to commute to Manchester city centre, I cycled (from Royton) along Middleton Road, turned left past the Sarson's Vinegar factory, past JW Lees Brewery, along Greengate past BAE Systems then Lightbowne Road turning onto Oldham Road by the (former?) Wilsons Brewery. That way I avoided all the 70mph traffic on Broadway and the sheer volume of traffic on Oldham Rd. I don't know where you live in Failsworth, but if it's towards the Moston end, it might be an alternative. Setting off from the Broadway/Oldham Rd junction, 'my' route is 1km further and it also has a short but steep climb up Streetbridge Rd. In its favour is that there will be far less traffic which will also be slower moving
I've put what I reckon your current route and my suggested route into bikeroutetoaster.com so you can make your own mind up!

Have Oldham Council done anything about the state of the roads? I doubt it!! Some roads were more repair patch than original road and they were the better ones(!) because at least they'd filled the pot holes in. The state of Oldham's roads was the primary reason for me switching from a road bike to a MTB with slicks. 3 punctures (1 front, 2 rear) on a cold, wet windy February night was the last straw. Glad to say I've made the switch back to 700C now.
My commute is great, 13 km, 8 or so of which on a cycle path or tarmac'd 'farmers' lanes. No traffic lights, 2 roundabouts and a level crossing. Downhill into work and a good 10% stretch on the way home. If I'm feeling really fit and get my backside out of bed, I can also ride the Aecherlipass (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image ... lipass.png) taking me up to 1458m (4783ft) . Also, this year I set of from my girlfriend's parents at 5.25 am and cycled from Interlaken, round Lake Brienz over the Brünigpass and then on to work for 7:50am. 68km and 680m of climbing, hardly any traffic on a fresh summers morning, probably the best commute I'll ever make!!
I live at the bottom end of Failsworth nr the Droylsden / Newton Heath border.
I've experimented with going via greengate and that particular stretch isn't too bad, its when you get onto Burnley Lane good chance of getting skinned by cars getting a bit too close for comfort.
Here's my exact route to work http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=2264
this is fine at 7am but very busy from 430 pm onwards, so i use this route on the way home which uses some cycle paths to navigate part of Broadway but then cuts back up Middleton Rd and then join Fields new rd. [which now has traffic calming measures so if timed right you can be leading a convoy of cars down the road!!]
The roads are still dreadful in Oldham, i bought a Scott Sportster hybrid which is good but there are a few parts where you get jolted so much you nearly fall off.
Your commute sounds more like an Alpine cycling holiday than a commute to work 8)Commuter Surosa Toledo S34 Audax

In truth i love them both0 -
Barely any point in mentioning my 7 miles each way from West Putney (when I was a kid there was no such thing as West Putney but if that's what the estate agents call it, it must be correct) to Soho. For variety I alternate, as my fancy takes me, between Kings Road and Fulham Road - both are identical in distance and time, with Fulham Road itself slightly nicer to cycle but gets gnarled up at Knightsbridge, while Kings Road offers a lovely ride through Mayfair but is replete with traffic lights, zebra crossings and clueless sloanes and their fleet of always-ready taxis.0

Hi
I go from Newcastle under Lyme along the Stoke canal to Staffs uni where I work, eight miles round trip. The canal towpath is pretty well kept which is amazing considering the area and the way it is run. Lots of drunks when you get into Stoke though Kids have been known to set traps too.

my commute from Meanwood to Leeds city centre of only about 4 miles, has over the course of the year turned into anything up to 15 - 25 miles depending on if I have to take the whippersnappers to school or not.
At least I normally go straight home after work to try and get the three kids in bed at a reasonable hour.
Well, when I say straight home . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Your brave using the A404. Known of few mad drivers that cain it down there topping well over 100mph+.
Why dont you use the Henley road. Surely that would be faster? The doctor said I needed to start drinking more whiskey. Also, I’m calling myself ‘the doctor’ now0 -
Fastest by 10 mins is A404, scary as you like but can do it in 28 mins. Pinkneys Green and Winter Hill usually takes 38 mins and is 3 miles further. Henley has the worst road surfaces but takes a similar time to the Winter Hill route. The climb out of Marlow is horrible though, the back wheel constantly struggling for grip as it gets bounced by that chopped up surface.
What routes do you take?Short hairy legged roadie FCN 4 or 5 in my baggies.

Where do you all live and commute to/from?
I'm just outside Truro by the river Fal - my "commute" is purely for fitness and to wake me up properly each morning as it's out and back home again! Alongside a stunning river, through Truro (a "city" but a tiny one!) up to a rural valley, across a couple of fords and back again. A measly 10ish miles but with three absolute killer hills (although a lot easier than they used to be)
Utterly love the ride and can't function properly without it now.
