Electrically powered paper shredders. Why dont they just put a nice big hand wound crank on there? :?0

One of the "managers" on my floor has a battery powered stapler on her desk. Another has an ELECTRIC POWERED DESK.
Yes you have read that correctly, its so that she can raise or lower it as nec. It was agreed that my desk was too low for me, did I get a powered desk? No I didnt, I got blocks to put under the legs of the desk to raise it.
I DONT want a powered desk really.0 -

No.
Bearing in mind the need to reduce enrgy wastage, is there a more pointless thing than the constantly illuminated, constantly rotating (when working) advert panels stuck on the outside of bus shelters?Spring!

The leaf blower is the most pointless *tool*, but the ads are the most pointless *thing*.
Leaf blowers are less pointless than rotating adverts.
I presume.0 -

I was meaning i'm confuse why anyone would want to pay for a leaf blower- let the wind blow them - it does a good job.

Spurs arent pointless though, we have two of them0 -
rotating advert boards are less pointless than non rotating advert boards, well from the money point of view. Why put up witht only being able to rent spce to 1 company when you can rent space to 3.
Leaf Blowers, now there is a pointless thing. Surley a Leaf Vaccum would make more sense, can't have the leaves decomposing and mulching up a path. Oh wait that may be the point in leaf blowers, no wind, leaves mulching up path. I know I won't bother with a broom to move them into the grassy verge or flower bed, no we will use a dsmall 2 stroke engine for it.Do Nellyphants count?

+1 when I don't get round to shaving for x days0 -
Aren't they more commonly used for getting leaves /out of/ flower beds? Hence not using a broom. It's also difficult to sweep leaves on grass.0

Also good for drying a wet bike off.
As far as I know blowers also suck. My house is a depository for all the leaves in the neinbourhood owing to some strange anomoly of the wind. My leaf hoover stops me disappearing under a pile of leaves at this time of the year. They go in a brown wheely bin for the Council to cart them off and make fertiliser or something.0 -

One particularly windy day last winter I was riding through Congleton. The wind was gusting right-to-left. Passing a row of houses set back off the road, one fella was out with his leaf-blower, blowing them all from left-to-right, away from the houses. As fast as he was clearing them away, the wind was putting them back. Pointless, but it made me smile0

There are purley leaf blowers which are pretty damn powerful machines. For a domestic garden with few trees they probably don't make sense.
There are also leaf blowers which can be converted to leaf vacs - invariably by dismantling the machine and reassembling it. Because they collect debris they are more useful but are cumbersome to use.
We have a leaf vac which, at the flick of a lever, will also blow the leaves into a pile ready for collection. It's not the most powerful blower ever invented though.
The main benefit is that the vac also shreds the leaves by a factor of 20 (handbook fugure) meaning that they mulch down much faster and, for the ones we dispose of, take fewer trips to the composting centre.
For the next three or four weekends the neighbour opposite will no doubt use his blower (which is powerfull!) to push the leaves into a long (and quite deep pile), whilst I and our next door neighbour vac them up.
We have a combined total of 27 mature trees (ash, beech, sycamore and oak). We also have a constant and seemably endless supply of leaf mould.....

Leaf blowers:
I was out for a ride last week and came across a council worker shepherding leaves into large piles in the cycle lane.
Without the leaf blower, blocking the cycle lane would have been much more difficult0 -
We have electrically driven paper towel dispensers in the loos. You wave your hand in front and they dispense another sheet. I'm sure its cheaper than just a box on the wall with paper towels in....0

My young son discovered this much to his suprise, and quicky proceeded to deposit x metres of paper all over the floor of the gents floor in the very palatial Palace Hotel, Torquay !!Republic of Lithuania0

"Baby on board" stickers in car windows? Surely makes no difference unless they're driving? :shock:Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos0

Leaf blowers are cracking bits of kit if you've got loads of trees. Saved me hours of raking this year. In our small cul-de-sac, our house/front garden is just at the point where all the leaves collect. Blow leaves into a pile, then you can either suck and shred them up, or pick them up into the re-cycling bin/compost.
So, not entirely useless....
Electric Pencil sharpeners.....there is one.....great fun to shred a pencil in seconds though !0 -
The so called gardeners (the ones that charge for tidying your garden) use them to blow the leaves from their customers gardens into the gutter outside so that they clog up the grids. None of them can be bothered raking up the leaves.0
-
My leaf blower came into it's own yesterday. It turned a two-hour job into 30 minutes.
It's all very well talking about raking the lawn, but when it's wet, that's akin to ploughing it! The blower gets the leaves off without damage.
And the smell of unburned hydrocarbons is one of life's great pleasures!0 -
My in laws have an electric pepper mill with a torch. Handy if you have a broken wrist I guess, in the middle of a powercut.0

MoonCircuit wrote:Is there a more pointless power tool than a leaf blower?
Dunno probably. I have one but rarely use it as I prefer to burn the calories with a rake & make less noise. However, they're very good at clearing leaves from graveled surfaces, you can't do that with a rake without picking up gravel too.0 -

Now, having used compressed air blowers for cleaning in factories, I can see why using a blower is handier that a brush/rake if you do it all day every day, though like the compressed air, I don't see how its practical for a domestic user.0
