Bit disappointed in myself.

Last week 98 miles -56commute(2days) 42 civilian hoping to add a 3rd commuting day this week and break the 100mile barrier

This week nothing to date due to a heavy cold which always strikes when the kids go back to school. Would have been fine on the bike but couldnt face the thought of arriving at work wet and getting change in the cold smelly toilet.

What's your views on cycling when feeling a bit ropey!

...somebody really needs to fund some research into why the common cold is so much more devastating to males than females...

...I am suffering from Man Flu and am taking time off the bike...

...seriously, if you're not feeling up to it don't ride your bike...
...all the way...'til the wheels fall off and burn...

I would say time off the bike is necessary to recover quickly

And lack of excessive whingeing about it is necessary to MTFU
Emerging from under a big black cloud. All help welcome
  • You forgot to add another option:

'Man Flu....Would kill a woman dead if she ever caught it.'

Just don't mention that I said that to my wife...at least not while in striking range.

    David

PS...my wife has trophies for small fire arms target shooting while she was in the RAF, so that's a hell of a strike range she's got...

Also, I have calculated my FCN as 12...although I have no idea what that actually means.

Genuine flu - avoid the bike at all costs and wait until you're better! Serious exertion can, in extreme cases, be fatal (talented '60s/'70s Norwood Paragon rider Robin Buchan apparently died whilst out on the bike trying to 'sweat out' his flu).
Cold - light/moderate exercise generally considered OK, but wrap up well.
"Man flu" - pass. I'm a bloke yet, though I do occasionally get colds, sore throats, etc., which largeIy prove no obstacle to everyday life and soon vanish [1], I have no concept of this. Suggested actions include (a) getting a grip, (b) belting up and (c) stopping feeling sorry for yourself. Apologies if this sounds a bit harsh, lads.

    David

[1] Or maybe I'm just an exception and have an overly-aggressive immune system?

Unless I'm too ill to go to work, I continue commuting by bike. The fresh air helps the recovery process. Whether that's cancelled out by the exertion is another matter, but I choose to ignore such considerations because the other option is the train/tube combo, which are unpleasant at the best of times, let alone when you're under the weather.
    FCN 2-4.

Can I answer to more than one of the above options...pleeeez!

Anyways exercise temporarily lowers your white blood cell count so if you are getting or have a cold it will weaken your immune systen slightly so rest and not exerting yourself is best really.

Having said that I still ride anyway but just accept that my normal super-human levels of PURE athleticism are somewhat reduced so that anything more than 10mph or a climb greater than 2% reduces me to tears whilst my kitten like limbs try feebly to MTFU

Come on guys, we all know man-flu is not about actually feeling bad, it about being lavished with attention and pampering by the fairer sex.

I'm weak like a kitteh when around the gf, but once on the road i'm made of steel, and none shall pass...

God, i hope she doesn't read this...

It's probably also a good measure of when you are too ill to go to work, I occasionally have problems determining whether I am feeling shit due to a cold or shite due to rhinitis, the difference between the 2 I have decided is

Rhinitis related blocked noses go away with increased doses of steroids and venting the room.
When you empty the ocnents of your nose it is very obvious what is causing it.
Rhinitis Coughs don't result in fits after a bit of excercise
Rhinitis related sleep deficts occur without being awake all night coughing and apparent level of sleep is equal to normal level of sleep.

Look. It's simple. Don't ride when ill. If you sneeze while riding when suffering with a big wet cold, all you get is a faceful of snot.

There is NO way you can ever recover from this.

    WHAT A BUNCH OF WIMPS!

I don't let a sniffle keep me from my (2.5mile) commute!

If I'm too ill to cycle I'm too ill to work so I just don't go in. Luckily this happens very rarely because unlike some of the girls on here, I prefer to MTFU. :D

Seriously though, the alternative to cycling for me is public transport. If I'm already under the weather then a couple of trips on PT is sure to develop any sniffle into full blown man flu. PT is a breeding ground for nasty bugs.
  • Hm. I was a phlegm factory on the way in yesterday, and today my bowels are rather free-flowing. Let's hope the dreaded 'lurg' doesn't hit until Saturday!

My gf has just come down with something highly unpleasant and, as of 10 minutes ago, she was boarding an economy class flight from Brisbane to London

As for me it's three weeks since my cold and I'm still producing stuff that really a healthy man shouldn't be producing. Colds, eh.

It bloomin' is... I have to travel around europe quite intensively for 2 week stints every so often for my work, and I haven't yet figured out a good way to cycle to LHR, so I have to take the tube.

Surrounded with sniffing, coughing, sneezing germ-bags. No wonder I have a bl**dy cold.

I'd just like to say as a follow-through, sorry, follow-up to that comment, that it was rather more information than I needed. And I haven't long had lunch, either.

wear a fullface helmet, then no-one will know and you can empty it out when you get to work!

Sorry, I'll try to be more discrete/euphemistic in the future.
