Hi there,

I'm currently looking at upgrading my existing bike with a new wheel set and XT discs (upgrading from v-brakes). However after looking at the recent comments by everyone saying "buy a new bike, it's cheaper" i'm beginning to wonder. Can anyone please give me a rough value on my bike based on the spec below.
2003 Claud butler aluminium 20" frame (silver)
eastern EA70 stem and monkey lite EA70 riser bar, yeti look on's
2008 front and rear XT mechs.
lx dual control levers
2008 deore hollowtech 2 cranks, bb, chain, cassette and v-brakes
dmr v12's
marzocchi Mx pro ETA 120mm.

i know it will be a rough price but i need to see if it is worth upgrading. The upgrade will cost me £210. will a get a better bike than i have now for say, £600 i'm not sure.

  • Sounds like a quite a nicely spec`ed bike, but I reckon you`d get no more than £250-300 for it.In this case I`d say go with the wheel and disc brake upgrade, because you`d have to spend more in the region of £800 to get a better bike than what you would have.

Not supposed to post questions on bike values, but I guess there is two parts to this ;-)

The frame lets down the value. That 210 quid deal is very good.
  • sorry supersonic didn't realise, i'm all new to this. Guess i'll go for the upgrade and maybe even stretch to a cove stiffee frame after xmas. that way i won't be let down by the CB frame.

Sounds like a cracking plan. :D
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

Looking at the spec I think you've passed the point where your bike is worth more to you than it is to someone else but at least you have a some components that can be transferred to a quality frame.

New wheels make a big difference and if you can afford a frame as well, I say go for it.
