I prefer my old Kona Dr Dew to commute on than the swanky road bike I borrowed, the Dr DEW much more enjoyable and only slightly slower!

can I get the best of both

the wide bars with so much easier to live with,

what recommendations do you guys have please?

Tight fitting T-Shirts, facials, do some work on your arms, dance with your hands raised above your head, get your teeth whitened, buy a best of the Communards CD and The Wizard of Oz.

    Good luck.
Fixed gear for wet weather / hairy roadie for posing in the sun.

    What would Thora Hurd do?

    Flat bar road bike.

I have no idea why you would want one, but they do exist.

Learn to love drop bars... they have been popular for a long time for good reasons...

One of the reasons is their adjustability- if you are finding them uncomfortable you may be able to tweak them into a position that suits you better- the stem can be raised or lowered (at least on all bikes I've ridden), or changed to adjust the reach, the bars can be twisted up or down and the brake levers can be moved up or down the curve of the bars to suit you.
Get the position right for riding on the hoods, as that's where you spend most of your time. If you progress to riding on the drops all/most of the time, then you can optimise for that instead.

You will likely need to adjust your saddle if your position changes significantly as a result.

    Cheers,
    W.

    Mate,

Don't listen to them. Not long had my Dew Deluxe and it's great. Not perfect but extreme either. It has been great in the less than perfect weateher down in devon. Loads of speed, lots of water disc brakes. Plus I like the position. I may buy a ss or road bike this december but that will be for excercise. For the commute the Kona is fun fun fun.
