shoes - Specialized, Shimano, Sidi are all good. Local shop is the best place as you need to try them on really. Or online and take a punt...Make sure they are mtb shoes, so they have a sole (roadies are flat, usually)
spuds - Shimano 520s. Cheap and work well. See ebay or usual online sellers (Ribble, CRC etc.)
Set the spuds up so that the spring is quite loose, so you can get your foot out easily. Go to a carpark and practice. Some poeple fall off a lot...Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0
