Factory wheels?

Hi,

I am thinking of getting a new bike with the intention of doing fast rides, and races on it. It will be a light alu frame. I am just not sure what wheels I want/need. I have old mavic ma3 handbuilt wheels on my current bike which are fine, and I was thinking of getting some Mavic open pros this time, however I have been looking at some of the factory wheels available.

I would be thinking along the lines of spending up to around 300 for some fairly light ones, maybe like the Mavic Aksium, Shimano ultegra, Campagnolo neutron. Are wheels like this noticably better then a pair of decently built Open pros?(camp centaur hubs).

Can anyone reccomend any more, or should I stick with the Mavic Open-pros?

Thanks for any advice,

Tim

Don't know about the rest but the Mavic Aksium's are far from light however the Mavic Kysrium Elites are in your price point and get pretty favourable reviews both from the mags and from users. Just search them on this forum and you will find plenty of their devotees.

I'll probably get shot down here but the main difference between light wheels and heavier wheels I've noticed (in my 2 weeks of trying them) is really only in their ability to accelerate and climb otherwise once the wheels get spinning they all pretty much roll along and it is more down to the tyre choice just how well they do that. I would imagine for racing the ability to accelerate could be quite important but as I don't do any I will leave others to address that.

No doubt you'll get plenty of people recommending handbuilts, but if you want factory wheels Kysrium Eiltes are very good - I've just bought a pair for my new build having had a set for four years on my best bike.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos
