Call me a numpty but I have done a search on the forum and nothing is generated. What does FCN mean at the bottom of some peoples posts? Obviously some sort of number but for what purpose. :?

It's what score you'd be to someone who was playing the commuting racing game.

FCN = Food Cahin Number, where you sit in the biking food chain.

The lower the number, the more god like you are...

The higher the number the more dog like you are

Erm without having to consult the SCR thread (I'm sure this came up somewhere......) I'd say no modifier as it sorta comes under the "expected upgrades" hence roadies don't get a modifier for having clipless pedals.

Well - the shaven legs +1 is countered by you being the weaker sex - so it all balances out in the end

  • Hm, is a folding full suspension knobbly mountain bike FCN 10 or 11?

Also, why is the scooter at one end of the food chain, and the electric bike at the other?

I'd say more like a 20! Sorry but I didn't even know folding full suspension knobbly mountain bikes existed...
Also, why is the scooter at one end of the food chain, and the electric bike at the other?

Because scooters can hit 40mph and electric bikes are the most pitifully slow piles of w@nk since the G-Whizz. Scalping an electric bike is like scalping a child with stabilisers, down hill, with the wind at your back, on a TT bike in a skinsuit. :D

By scooter they mean those horrid petrol things. I think they where put in to give those at the upper end of the food chain something to aim for as they should be able to do 30 on the flat!

Electric bikes on the other hand are normally not able to reach such high speeds so got shunted all the way down as they where seen as a "lazy" (i.e MTFU and pedal properly fool!) option :-) Any other SCRer's please correct me if this is wrong but that's the impression I got!

Even if that electric bike is currently whirring its way up a 20% gradient?

I disagree - the FCN is mostly about your bike (and other kit) not you. An FCN of 10 scalping an FCN of 1 - that's god like and the FCN=1 should immediately trade their bike for a (presumably carbon-framed  ) zimmer.

A low FCN makes you more open to torment and humiliation. Anyone can buy a low FCN - it's what you do with it that counts.
Never be tempted to race against a Barclays Cycle Hire bike. If you do, there are only two outcomes. Of these, by far the better is that you now have the scalp of a Boris Bike.
  • Currently FCN 11[12]. About to go to 7[8] [+1 due to beard :D ]

So I'm about to open myself up to torment and humiliation then. Oh well, at least I'll get to work faster and there's less chance of being mugged for my trail bike.

I've been thinking about shaving my beard off. Better not eh.

Anyway, shouldn't there be a distinction between a wee chin warmer, and full on facial topiary?

If you have a look at the ancient scriptures (SCR thread, around page 295-300 I think) there is a discussion about the differences between full on beards and those wee chin warmers sported by the city types :-D

Disagree all you want, but I'm right! :)

No one aspires to be the 10th in the world, everyone wants to be number 1! People at No. 1 are more god like, held at higher esteem, get more respect. Whether you buy that respect or not does not matter in the game, you have to prove you are the best by not being dropped by anyone!

Where as if you're loitering round 9 in the food chain you can be dropped by roadies all day long, and no one cares.

The "you" was an all encompassing "you and your bike" you.

Your bike doesn't sit on the food chain without you, and modifiers count for both you and your bike.

Your (personal) appearance effects the FCN, beard +1, Wrap arounds -1, Baggies +1, Face Mask +1, little cycle cap -1, team strip -1, TDF jersey -2 not the bike you ride (which is just a starting point on the Food Chain)

There are a few lady shavers who are at -1

But cycling silver medalists are at -5, gold medalists are -10 IIRC

That was after VP was wrote about riding round on a brompton!

Hmm I have finally done the calculations and I appear to be 0 or -1, depending on whether I have my pack on.

I need to get more miles in my legs. You lot would leave me standing :(

Grow a beard and wear baggies till you get yourself sorted out! ....Oh and the lady legged roadies doesn't count for you girlies, unless of course you are a serious cyclist and you shave for sport rather than looks

  • Wow! Thanks for the replies peoples! I didn't expect to open ye olde can of worms!

Did the calculation = FCN 3. Am prepared for much torment and humiliation 'cos it's certainly the bike and not what I can do with it. Memo to self - grow beard! :)

    Cheers
