Hey
First off im a weight and style wennie, ok there I said it, god that felt good, anyway...
I am looking at 3 headsets, and as its x-mas, I am going to pimp my bike out instead of buying gadgets, as I am starting to fall in love with biking all over again, due to the bike that I bought.
Anyway my choices are:
1. Chris king
2. hope
3. the new crank brothers cobalt sl, at 65grams.
The reason I chose these is becuase they have got a good name, and they look bling, simple as.
Thanks guys.

Personally, I'd go for the Hope, as it's at least as well sealed as the King. The Cobolt is light, but when it wears out is the races are worn as well as the bearings, it means a whole new headset :-(0

To be honest I heard that Crank bros are coming out with some dodgy stuff.
I heard people's cranks splitting in half when doing normal xc stuff.
So not too good already.
I have been leaning towards the Hope or Chris king, the only reason I chose crank bros, is because of the weight.

Chris King. Last headset you will ever need.0

what is the bike?
will the ones you want fit?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
Parktools :?:SheldonBrown0 -
See im not sure on size yet.
Im dumb like that, see something I like and then think.. will it fit.
This is my bike.

Thanks0 -
well cris king do not do one that fits.
and crank brothers do not make one that fits."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
Parktools :?:SheldonBrown0 -
How did you figure that out?
But to be expected, my seatpost is 31.6, which I find an odd size from the standard.
So just out of curiosty, and just because I dont know, what size do I need?
Thanks mate
It is a german bike so its not going to be standard uk and us sizes.0 -
size is not the issue. the type is. you have an Zero stack headset (or internal )
size is the standard 1 1/8th."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
Parktools :?:SheldonBrown0 -
Can that not be changed?
So what your saying is that my headset is in the tube.. yes?
So what are my options.
Thanks mate.0 -
any Zero stack headset.
read about the types on parktools."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

So I guess my blue coloured pimp is gone then.
But on the bright side it is lighter and cheaper.
Do they perform the same?
And again anyway of changing this, and if yes is it worth it?
Thanks nicklouse.0 -
And again anyway of changing this, and if yes is it worth it?
explain?
if you mean changing the type No.
you can still look at the Hope Zero stack (or internal as they call them)."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
Parktools :?:SheldonBrown0 -
I mean having the bottom part showing in blue, by the fork.
As I have noticed there is nothing there right now, becuase of this zero stack as you said.
I just though they did it is becuase to save money.
here is a drawing lol
chris king
.................
then bike tube
......................
then bottom by fork

WTF NO Cris king.
you have a "Low Profile", "Zero Stack", "Integrated with Cups", "Internal Headset", "Semi-Integrated" typesThis type of headset system has, unfortunately, several names. Cane Creek® uses ZS or Zero Stack, while FSA® uses the Orbit Z series. The low-profile, zero-stack, integrated-with-cups, semi-Integrated, or internal-headset systems use pressed frame cups that act as a holder for the bearings. The cups have a flange, or lip, and sit adjacent to the outer edge of the top and bottom of the headtube. The headtube is a relatively large outside diameter, approximately 50mm, and cups allow the bearings to sit flush or even inside the headtube. The headset bearings sit "internally" to the top and bottom of the headtube. Some models use a cup that holds a cartridge bearing. The cartridge bearing is a slip fit into the cups. The cups act as a bearing holder and do not take bearing movement or wear directly. Other types have the cartridge bearing and cup/holder as a unit. These are simply replaced as a unit when it is worn out. Still another version of this type uses a cup and cone system with caged ball bearings, similar to the conventional threadless headsets. Additionally, the depth of insertion into the headtube will vary between brands and type. If the bike was designed for a shallow cup, a deeper cup will not properly fit. This lack of consensus in depth makes reaming the inside of the headtube problematic.
The Low Profile type of headset is adjusted in a similar fashion as threadless headsets. Pressure is applied from an adjusting cap and bolt in the stem. The Low Profile headsets, even the "zero stack", do have some stack height, in spite of their name. The steering column is commonly 1-1/8 inch diameter.
Park Tool offers the 690-XL facer for some of the Low Profile headtubes. This facer is used with the 768 Pilot to machine the top and bottom surfaces of the headtube.

or has Hope call it an integral (low stack cups) headset.

That has confused me.
I am new, and yes You said no chris king before, was just using as an example.
So what you are saying is the cup inside my tube cannot be removed, and therefor I cannot have something like a chris king or crank bros.
My tube looks the same as everyone elses, so I can understand why I cant just remove everything and just replace the whole set.
I know I might sound kinda dumb, but I have never bought a headset or really anything before.
Thanks0 -
if it was me unless the headset is worn out i'd leave it be, just keep it clean and well lubed. there's other things to bling up, seatpot, seatpost clamp, stem, bars, grips, pedals, saddle, custom wheels, cables.0

read park tools about headsets.
yes you can remove the headset but it must be replaced with the same type.
take a picture of your head tube showing both of you headset cups."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Thanks for that guys, I did not know you could not change no matter what.
Thanks for the help and sorry to be a pain.0
