My next Bike (perhaps)

I'm a 58 year old cyclist who has a Orbit Ventura which I,ve used for commuting B&B touring and camping weekends. I was fine with this and thinking of getting a Paul Hewitt Cheviot for my next bike.
Last June I did a 100 mile sportive ride for charity and really enjoyed it although I finished way down the field averageing 15 mph. My attention has now turned to getting a bike that might allow me to go faster. I looked at the Roubaix but have since been told that carbon frames have a short life
I went to the cycle show last weekend and liked the look of the Titanium bikes.
I'm going to have a test ride on a Van Nickolas Yukon as this seems a good buy as I can still do a tour on it apart from loading the front forks so I will have to keep my Orbit to do loaded touring
What I would like opinions on am I right spending a lot of money on this bike to do perhaps 3 to 5 sportives which hopefully I would do faster than I would do on my Orbit or should I spend the bulk of the money on a good tourer and spend say £500 on a alloy road bike like a Allez.
Any opinions would be welcome
