I believe there was a test in a past issue of Cycling Weekly where they tested the RS, Specialized Roubaix and Trek Madone. The reason for the test was to find what was the perfect sportive bike and the conclusion was the Roubaix.
So maybe the RS isn't the perfect place to start.

  • I've just built one up with Chorus, handbuilt open pro's and 3T bars and stem as a longer distance sportive / climbing bike. First impressions are very good - very light and very comfortable. Just toodling around London to get everything dialled in and didnt have a single bone-jarring crunch no matter what I went over :)

Havent done enough to say what its like over distance, but i've a very hilly 100k ride planned for tomorrow, so should be in a better position to say then. As I said in another similar thread though, I reckon your choice of wheels will dictate comfort as much if not more than the frame.

    Cheers

I fancy the RS frameset so am also interested to hear owner's opinions. In terms of a "perfect sportive bike", here's my attempt.

    Frameset & forks - Specialized s-Works Roubaix 2006
Groupset - Ultegra SL (incl. pedals)
Chainset - FSA Carbon Pro Elite Compact 48/34
Cassette - Marchisio Aviotek custom 13-28 (lots of low gears to help find that perfect climbing cadence. not just as a bailout)
    Bars - Cinelli Ram
    Ergomo powermeter
Wheels - Shimano Dura Ace WH-7850 Carbon Clincher
    Tyres - Michelin Pro3 Race
Seatpost - Specialized s-Works Pave SL
    Saddle - Fizik Aliante Carbon
Bottle Cages - Specialized Rib Cage Pro Road
    7.8kg as pictured

I had a demo RS for the weekend and did 80 miles in two 40 miles rides both with about 3200 ft of climbing. I thought it was great I didn't want to get off it. I normally ride a Wilier Izoard and the RS was much more comfortable, far less jarring. It had 39-53 and 11- 23 whereas my Izoard has a compact with 12-25 so some of the hills were tough. I'm even thinking of replacing the Izoard for one, which will cost a lot of money.

The wheels on my Izoard are Fulcrum Racing 3s and the wheels on the the RS where Shimano with no name on them. The group set on the RS was Ultegra and worked much better and quieter than the Centaur on my Izoard. The handle bars were PRO Vibe which were wide diameter for the complete length of the top, which I really liked.
