  • I have two fixies
    .

Do you live in the US ?
  • On a "FIXED" the gear ratio is always referred to in inches, so I ride 68" and 72" !

I ride 48*16 to 48*18 (72, 76 and 82), depending on what I'm trying to do. I find the wind hurts me more than the hills.

Really fast but its to much for a long ride so i'm gonna get a 18tooth rear.

Everybody rides what suits them, don't get hung up on what other people ride. The only real solution is to suck it and see.

The sort of terrain you will be riding in should also play a big part in your decision. If you are never going to go up a hill no point in having something that you spin out easily on the flat, etc.

When deciding on the gearing for my fixe I rode around one of my training loops in one gear on my ‘normal’ bike and then worked out the ratio. Whatever you choose will not be (this is the whole nature of the beast) perfect for all occasions but you must get something you can live with. I used this page on Steve Morris’s site to work out the ratio/sprocket teeth required

Bear in mind that unless you do the same sort of riding on the same terrain all the time you will want to change ratios sometimes. Which is, of course, the perfect excuse for having several bikes.
